Why health insurance matters

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. You need valid coverage not only for medical care, but also for university enrollment and for your residence permit. Both public and private insurance can be accepted if they meet official requirements.

Public vs. private health insurance - the basics

Public health insurance (GKV)
Public insurance follows standardized rules and offers comprehensive coverage. It is widely accepted by doctors and hospitals and usually involves less paperwork, as medical providers bill the insurer directly.

Private health insurance (PKV)
Private insurance plans vary in price and coverage. Costs depend on factors such as age, coverage level, deductibles, and health status at the time of application. Bills are often paid upfront and reimbursed later, which can mean more administrative effort.

Age and study status matter

• Students under 30 enrolled at a university
  Public student health insurance is usually available and often the most straightforward option.
• Students aged 30 or older
  The student tariff in public insurance usually ends at 30.
  However, staying in public insurance may still be possible through voluntary membership, which is typically more expensive and subject to certain conditions (for example, previous insurance history).
  If this is not possible, private insurance is required.
• Students in language courses or Studienkolleg
  During preparatory programs, private insurance is commonly required.
  After enrollment at a university, switching to public student insurance may be possible if eligibility conditions are met.
