DHBW Heilbronn does not waive tuition for non-EU students. Since the winter semester 2017/18, Baden-Württemberg charges international students from outside the EU and EEA a state tuition fee of 1,500 EUR per semester at Bachelor level, under the state's Landeshochschulgebührengesetz (LHGebG). Nationals of Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, Eritrea, Yemen and Sudan can apply for an exemption before their studies start.

On top of that fee, every student, EU and non-EU alike, pays a semester contribution collected on behalf of the Studierendenwerk Heidelberg, which also runs DHBW Heilbronn's halls of residence and other student services.

Unlike most students, you are paid a monthly salary by your partner company rather than living off savings, so it is not settled whether that salary can stand in for the usual blocked account proof of funds at your specific visa mission or only supplements it; confirm with your consulate before assuming either way.

DHBW Heilbronn has no institutional deadline for non-EU applicants the way most universities do. Admission depends on securing a three-year study contract with one of its roughly 750 partner companies, and each company advertises and fills its own study places on its own schedule, commonly up to twelve months before the fixed 1 October start. The one fixed point is the start date itself: DHBW Heilbronn's Bachelor's programmes begin only in October, with no April or summer intake.

Applications for the 2026/27 intake are open on a rolling basis through partner companies. There is no restricted-admission (NC) track in the traditional sense; admission is a two-stage process of the DHBW credential check plus the partner company's own hiring decision.

Applications do not go through DHBW Heilbronn directly and do not go through uni-assist. Before you can enrol, you first find and sign a three-year study contract with one of DHBW Heilbronn's partner companies; only then does the university check whether your foreign school certificate is equivalent to the German Abitur and whether your German is good enough.

DHBW Heilbronn runs 0 degree programmes fully in English for degree-seeking students. "Very good German language proficiency is compulsory," stated explicitly on the university's own admissions page for applicants with a foreign school certificate, and every Bachelor's programme (BWL-Handel, BWL-Dienstleistungsmanagement, BWL-Food Management, Wein-Technologie-Management, Wirtschaftsinformatik, BWL-Digital Commerce Management and others) is taught in German. The "International Retail Management" specialisation inside BWL-Handel has an international focus and an international student body, but it is not English-taught. The Heilbronn International Program, taught entirely in English, exists only for one-semester exchange students nominated by a partner university abroad, not for anyone applying for a full degree here.

This is the one section where the usual question does not apply: DHBW Heilbronn does not test English for admission, it tests German, because there is no English-taught Bachelor's here. The university states plainly that very good German is compulsory, and its own admissions information for foreign school-leavers is published in German only for exactly that reason. No specific minimum certificate or level (a B2 or a C1 threshold, for example) is published on DHBW Heilbronn's own pages, only the general phrase "sehr gute Deutschkenntnisse" (very good German skills). If your German is not yet at that level, DHBW points applicants to the AIM Heilbronn "Studienvorbereitendes Jahr," a one-year programme that takes German from B1 to C1.

Your partner company may also set its own minimum German level for the job interview stage, separately from the university's requirement.

DHBW does not run semesters and lecture periods the way most universities do. The academic year always starts 1 October, but the theory and practice blocks that make up each "semester" are set per programme and per intake year (Jahrgang), typically running about 12 weeks each, so there is no single university-wide calendar to check. Ask your specific Studiengang for its "Phasenplan" once you are admitted, rather than looking for one date that applies to everyone.

Example only, not a general figure: DHBW Heilbronn's published phase plan for the BWL-Food Management 2024 cohort runs theory and practice blocks of roughly 12 to 16 weeks each, in a pattern set separately for every programme and intake year.

The youngest of DHBW's nine sites and, within the dual-education system, Germany's largest dedicated trade and retail university, founded in 2010 with support from the Dieter-Schwarz-Stiftung and based on the purpose-built Bildungscampus in central Heilbronn. Its roughly 1,500 students alternate three-month blocks of company work and university study across around 750 partner companies, and nearly every major German food retailer trains staff through its BWL-Handel and BWL-Food Management programmes.

Being on a compact campus next to its partner companies, several of them based in the immediate Heilbronn-Neckarsulm area, means the practical phases double as a direct route into local employers.
