How much does Protestant University of Applied Sciences for Social Work & Diaconia Hamburg cost for international students?
EH Hamburg is a church-run, state-recognised university and charges a study fee. The same fees apply to all students, including those from outside the EU.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| B.A. Social Work & Diaconia (full-time) | 500 EUR per semester |
| M.A. Social Work | 500 EUR per semester |
| Semester fee (HVV semester ticket, hardship fund, student body) | About 200 EUR per semester; confirm the current amount with the university |
| Administration fee | 150 EUR once, at first enrolment |
Whatever the tuition position, the proof of funds still applies. For the student visa you need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
Applications go directly to the university by email (studium.eh@rauheshaus.de), as complete PDF documents; missing documents are not requested later. There is no uni-assist step.
| Degree | Intake | Application period |
|---|---|---|
| B.A. Social Work & Diaconia (full-time) | Winter only | 15 March – 15 April |
| M.A. Social Work (full-time) | Winter only | 1 – 31 May |
The B.A. has 65 places a year, and decisions are sent between late June and mid-July. With your application you confirm that you respect the Protestant orientation of the university and will engage with Christian and interreligious questions; church membership is not required. Applicants without prior practical training must complete a 13-week full-time pre-study internship by the start of the third semester.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No degree programme is taught in English; all teaching is in German. The university does not publish a German level for international applicants, so ask the Studierendensekretariat (studium.eh@rauheshaus.de) before you apply.
Two degrees can be studied full time on campus: the B.A. Social Work & Diaconia (6 semesters, including a 36-week integrated placement) and the consecutive M.A. Social Work (4 semesters).
About Protestant University of Applied Sciences for Social Work & Diaconia Hamburg
The Evangelische Hochschule für Soziale Arbeit & Diakonie has trained social workers and deacons since 1971. It is run by the Rauhes Haus foundation in Hamburg-Horn and financed by the Protestant Church in Northern Germany and the City of Hamburg. Graduates receive state recognition as social workers and can also earn a church qualification as a deacon.
Besides the full-time B.A. and M.A., the university offers two dual B.A. variants (for people already working in social work and for career starters). Both require a contract with a social-work employer or placement provider in Germany, so they are not a route to a student visa and are not counted here.
