How much does Protestant University of Applied Sciences Hesse cost for international students?
The EHH states that it charges no tuition fees for its programmes in Darmstadt and Schwalmstadt-Treysa, for international students as well. Every student pays the semester contribution, which is set each semester and published at re-registration.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Tuition (Darmstadt and Schwalmstadt-Treysa) | None |
| Semester contribution (incl. semester ticket) | About 300 EUR per semester; confirm the current amount with EHH |
| One-off enrolment fee | 300 EUR |
| Evaluation of foreign certificates by the Hessian ministry | Fee charged if positive; amount on request |
| B.A. Religious/Community Education and Social Work (Kassel campus) | Tuition charged (about 1,950 EUR per semester); confirm with EHH Kassel |
The continuing-education Master's in Darmstadt and the part-time Kassel programmes charge their own fees. Whatever the tuition position, the proof of funds still applies: for the student visa you need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
Applicants with foreign certificates apply directly through the EHH online portal; there is no uni-assist step. If you do not yet have a university degree recognised in Germany, EHH forwards your school certificates to the Hessian Ministry of Science for evaluation, which charges a fee and takes time.
| Programme | Intake | Deadline (applicants with foreign certificates) |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's programmes in Darmstadt and Schwalmstadt-Treysa | Winter | 15 July (complete documents, no extension) |
| Master's programmes in Darmstadt | Winter / summer | See the programme page; late applications possible only with a degree already recognised in Germany |
| B.A. Religious/Community Education and Social Work (Kassel) | Winter | 31 August (applications reviewed at several earlier cut-off dates; info session and advisory talk required first) |
Apply as early as possible: the ministry evaluation and the visa both take time.
How many programmes are taught in English?
The EHH does not offer any degree programme taught in English. All Bachelor's and Master's programmes are taught in German.
Applicants with direct university access or a completed degree need German at C1 level, for example TestDaF with level 4 in all parts, DSH-2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, DSD II or Goethe-Zertifikat C2. If you first need a Studienkolleg (foundation course), B1 is required to apply.
About Protestant University of Applied Sciences Hesse
The Evangelische Hochschule Hessen is a state-recognised university of applied sciences run by the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, the Protestant Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck and the German YMCA (CVJM). It was created on 1 April 2026, when the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt (founded in 1971) was continued under the new name and joined by the CVJM-Hochschule in Kassel. Its seat is in Darmstadt, with a second site in Schwalmstadt-Treysa; the Kassel campus is due to move to Schwalmstadt-Treysa from autumn 2027.
The EHH focuses on social work, childhood and inclusive education, health promotion, and religious and community education. Nine of its degrees suit international students on a student visa, eight of them in Darmstadt or Schwalmstadt-Treysa and one full-time Bachelor's in Kassel. The part-time Kassel programmes, the work-integrated Social Work Bachelor's (which needs a paid contract with a practice partner) and the fee-based continuing-education Master's are designed to be studied alongside a job, so they are not a route to a student visa.
