Protestant University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

The Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg (EVHN) is the church-run, state-recognised university of applied sciences of the Lutheran Church in Bavaria. Its Bachelor's programmes are tuition-free; you only pay the Studierendenwerk contribution of 82 EUR per semester. All programmes are taught in German (B2 by enrolment). International applicants first get a uni-assist pre-check (VPD), then apply in the PRIMUSS portal from 1 May; closing dates vary by programme, from 31 July to 11 September.

How much does Protestant University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg cost for international students?

EVHN does not charge tuition for its Bachelor's programmes, and there is no separate fee for international students. Every student pays the Studierendenwerk contribution each semester.

ItemCost for international students
Bachelor's programmesNo tuition
Studierendenwerk contribution (everyone, from winter 2026/27)82 EUR per semester
Advanced Nursing Practice (M.Sc.)No tuition; plus RVV semester ticket 117 EUR per semester
Part-time Master's (e.g. Applied Educational Sciences)Fee per programme, e.g. 550 EUR per semester

No semester ticket is included for Bachelor's students; a discounted Deutschlandticket for students is available separately.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

Applications open on 1 May for winter (start 1 October) and run through the PRIMUSS portal. If your school or university certificates are from abroad, you first need a pre-check (VPD) from uni-assist, which takes up to six weeks, and you upload it to PRIMUSS by the document deadline shown there.

ProgrammeIntakeApplication period
Soziale Arbeit (B.A.)Winter1 May – 31 July
Pädagogik der Kindheit (B.A.)Winter1 May – 31 July
Management in der Sozial- und Gesundheitswirtschaft (B.A.)Winter / summer1 May – 31 August (winter); 15 October – 30 November (summer)

Heilpädagogik (B.A.), Gesundheits- und Pflegepädagogik (B.A.)WinterFrom 1 May; see the programme page for the closing date
Advanced Nursing Practice (M.Sc.)Summer15 November – 15 January, via the OTH Regensburg portal

EVHN often extends some closing dates in summer, but don't rely on it if you need a visa: apply early and get your VPD first. Most Bachelor's programmes also require a six-week full-time pre-study internship in a social or care setting, to be completed by 30 September.

How many programmes are taught in English?

No degree programme at EVHN is taught in English. You need German at B2 level by enrolment at the latest; the Studienkolleg Coburg assessment exam (FSP) also counts as proof.

Eight programmes can be studied full time: Soziale Arbeit, Management in der Sozial- und Gesundheitswirtschaft, Heilpädagogik, Pädagogik der Kindheit, Religionspädagogik und Kirchliche Bildungsarbeit, Diakonik, Gesundheits- und Pflegepädagogik, and the Master's in Advanced Nursing Practice. Diakonik needs prior vocational training in a related field, Gesundheits- und Pflegepädagogik a nursing qualification plus three years' work experience, and Advanced Nursing Practice a German nursing licence, so foreign qualifications usually have to be recognised first.

The Bachelor in Pflege and Soziale Arbeit dual require a contract with a German care provider or placement, and the other Master's programmes are part-time, so these are not suitable for a student visa.

About Protestant University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg

The Evangelische Hochschule Nürnberg (EVHN) is the state-recognised university of applied sciences of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. Its roots go back to 1927. Students of all faiths and none are welcome; church membership is not required.

EVHN teaches social work, education, nursing, management in social and health care, and church work. It is currently in Nuremberg-Gostenhof and moves to a new campus at Bayreuther Straße 1 (Rathenauplatz) from summer semester 2027. Its kompakt+ model helps international professionals with a foreign education degree qualify in childhood education, but it requires a job in Germany alongside the studies.
