Faculty of Theology Fulda for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

The Faculty of Theology Fulda is a small Catholic, church-run faculty that now admits postgraduate students only: the licentiate and the doctorate in Catholic theology. It charges low tuition fees plus a student union fee each semester, but publishes no amounts, so ask the faculty before applying. Enrolment runs from 1 July to 1 October for winter and 1 February to 1 April for summer, for all applicants. No programmes are taught in English.

How much does Faculty of Theology Fulda cost for international students?

As a church-run faculty, Fulda sets its own fees. Its mission statement says it charges low tuition fees and is not bound by state rules, but no amount is published, and the licentiate and doctoral regulations contain no fee provisions. Students also pay a student union (AStA) membership fee each semester when they re-register; this amount is not published either. No faculty document mentions a semester ticket or the Deutschlandticket. Enrolment can be refused if the fees due have not been paid.

Ask studienberatung@thf-fulda.de for the current tuition and re-registration fees, and whether they differ for non-EU students.

Whatever the fees turn out to be, you need proof of funds for the student visa: 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

The enrolment windows recur every year and apply to all applicants; no separate non-EU date is published. Contact studienberatung@thf-fulda.de first. Both degrees require a completed degree in Catholic theology graded at least "gut", Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and the written consent of your bishop or religious superior. Applicants with a theology degree from abroad are not excluded: the faculty's committees decide whether a foreign degree is equivalent, and licentiate applicants without the five-year German Diplom course must take an examination covering the whole of theology. You need sufficient German; the faculty's pages name TestDaF TDN 4 or DSH 3, so ask which applies. If you need a visa, start well before the enrolment window.

How many programmes are taught in English?

None. All study at the Faculty of Theology Fulda is in German. Licentiate and doctoral theses must be written in German or Latin; the examination or doctoral committee can allow another language only in special cases, with a detailed summary in German or Latin.

About Faculty of Theology Fulda

The Faculty of Theology Fulda (Theologische Fakultät Fulda) is a Catholic, church-run and state-recognised faculty in Fulda, Hesse, with the right to award doctorates. Its roots go back to the University of Fulda, founded in 1734; the present faculty dates from 1978. It had 11 students in summer 2025, all but one in postgraduate study, 5 of them from abroad. Since winter 2022/23 most teaching has taken place in Marburg in cooperation with Philipps University of Marburg, and Fulda continues as a research and postgraduate centre; the diocese announced in 2024 that vacant chairs will not be refilled. It is not part of Fulda University of Applied Sciences.
