How much does Faculty of Theology Trier cost for international students?

The Faculty of Theology Trier charges no tuition fees, whether for a first or a second degree. It is run by the Diocese of Trier and is state-recognised.

Students pay a semester contribution with every enrolment and re-registration. Faculty students pay the same contribution as University of Trier students: in winter 2026/27 this is about 394 EUR for new students, made up of 129 EUR for the Studierendenwerk Trier, 226.80 EUR for the Deutschlandsemesterticket, the student body contribution and a one-off student card fee.

Confirm the exact amount with the faculty secretariat (studiendekanat.theofak@uni-trier.de) before you pay.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

Master, Interreligious StudiesWinter (October)15 July
Magister TheologiaeSummer (April)15 January
Master, Interreligious StudiesSummer (April)15 January

The dates above are the University of Trier's earlier deadlines for applicants with foreign qualifications. The faculty's own application page lists 15 September (winter) and 15 March (summer) without separate international dates, and enrolment is handled by the faculty secretariat (Universitätsring 19, Trier). If you need a visa, apply by the earlier dates and confirm with the faculty. The Magister Theologiae normally starts in winter; a summer start is possible on request.

How many programmes are taught in English?

None. Both of the faculty's own degrees are taught in German. International applicants for the MA Interreligious Studies need German at C1, or B2 plus the DSH exam at the University of Trier. The Magister Theologiae also requires Latin and Greek (Latinum and Graecum) and an introduction to Hebrew, which can be completed during the first semesters. Some individual MA courses may be taught in English.
