How much does Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf cost for international students?

The Film University Babelsberg is a public university in Brandenburg and charges no tuition fees for its regular Bachelor's and Master's programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike. Every student pays a semester contribution of 397.80 EUR, which includes the Deutschlandsemesterticket for public transport. Each application costs 25 EUR (no fee for Digital Media Culture). The two continuing-education Master's (European Film Business and Law, and Digital Media Law and Management, LL.M. | MBA) are fee-paying programmes for working professionals.

Whatever the tuition position, the proof of funds still applies. For the student visa you need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

Animation, Cinematography, Screenwriting/Dramaturgy, Production, Editing, Directing, Sound Design, Set Design, Visual Effects and Virtual Productions (BA)Winter1 to 28 January
Digital Media Culture (BA)Winter15 June to 15 July

Directing for Animation, Cinematography, Creative Technologies, Editing, Production, Media Studies, Directing, Set Design, Sound Design (MA)Winter12 April to 18 May
Film Heritage (MA)Winter1 to 31 May

The deadlines are cut-off dates, and the same dates apply to applicants from outside the EU. The application periods fall well before the winter start, so a January or April to May application leads to a start in October of the same year. Admission to the artistic programmes is through an artistic aptitude test. In some programmes, applicants with a foreign school-leaving certificate must have it evaluated by uni-assist before applying, so start early. The university runs a PrepClass in the summer semester to prepare international applicants for their application.

How many programmes are taught in English?

One. The Master's in Creative Technologies (M.A., four semesters, full-time) is taught mainly in English, although the university also lists German at B2 level for it. All other programmes are taught in German: B2 (for example Goethe-Zertifikat B2, TestDaF 3 in all parts or DSH-1) for most programmes, and C1 for Digital Media Culture, Screenwriting/Dramaturgy, Film Heritage and Media Studies. You can apply with B1 and show the required level before you enrol. The continuing-education LL.M. | MBA programmes are also taught in English, but they are part-time, fee-paying programmes for working professionals and not a typical student-visa route.
