How much does Saar College of Fine Arts (HBKsaar) cost for international students?
HBKsaar charges no tuition fees, for EU and non-EU students alike, because it is a public art university funded by the state of Saarland. This applies to first degrees and Master's programmes.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| First degree (Bachelor's, Diplom, teaching degree) | No tuition fees |
| Master's | No tuition fees |
| Semester contribution (winter 2026/27) | 422.20 EUR per semester, including 226.80 EUR for the Deutschlandticket and a 50 EUR administrative fee |
| HBK-Card student ID | 5 EUR one-time |
The semester contribution shown applies to students enrolled only at HBKsaar; students also enrolled at another Saarland university pay a different amount.
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
Deadlines are final (Ausschlussfrist), and HBKsaar publishes one set of dates for all applicants. Portfolios for Fine Arts and Art Education must arrive by the same date.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's, Diplom and Art Education | Winter (October) | 31 May |
| Bachelor's, Diplom and Art Education | Summer (April) | No summer intake |
| Master's | Winter (October) | 31 May |
| Master's (programmes with a summer intake) | Summer (April) | 30 November |
Applicants with foreign school or university certificates submit a uni-assist preliminary review documentation (VPD) with their application; uni-assist processing can take up to six weeks, so request it early. Not every Master's programme admits in summer, so check your programme with HBKsaar before applying for a summer start.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No degree programme at HBKsaar is taught in English. All programmes require German at least at B2 level, for example Goethe-Zertifikat B2, DSH 2 or 3, telc B2 or DSD II.
