How much does Stuttgart Media University (HdM) cost for international students?
Students without German, EU or EEA citizenship pay tuition of 1,500 EUR per semester for Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes. The fee is set by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Non-EU students with a German school-leaving certificate are exempt, and other exemptions exist under state law; proof has to be submitted with the application or before re-registration. A second degree costs 650 EUR per semester.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor, non-EU students | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Master (consecutive), non-EU students | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Second degree | 650 EUR per semester |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 191.50 EUR per semester (80 EUR administration, 15 EUR student body, 96.50 EUR Studierendenwerk Stuttgart) |
The semester contribution does not include a Deutschlandticket or semester ticket. Compulsory health insurance comes on top (HdM's fee overview for one programme lists about 110 EUR). Part-time continuing-education programmes have separate fees.
Paying tuition does not replace the proof-of-funds requirement. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts. The 1,500 EUR tuition per semester comes on top of that.
What are the application deadlines?
You apply through the HdM application portal; there is no uni-assist step. If your school-leaving certificate is from abroad, you first need recognition by the Studienkolleg Konstanz, which can take several weeks, so start early. Applicants from China, India, Vietnam and Mongolia also need an APS certificate.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline (non-EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor (German-taught programmes) | Winter (October) | 15 July |
| Bachelor (German-taught programmes) | Summer (March) | 15 January |
| Bachelor Social Media Marketing & Management | Winter (October) | Entrance exam round 1: online form usually by 20 May, all documents by 22 June (certificates and recognition until 15 July). Non-EU applicants without a German school-leaving certificate must use round 1 |
| Bachelor Print Media and Packaging Technologies | Winter (October) | Application period usually 5 January to 19 July |
| Master (full-time) | Winter (October) | 15 July |
| Master (full-time) | Summer (March) | 15 January |
The dates for the two English-taught Bachelor's programmes are from the 2026 cycle and are set each year, so confirm them on the programme websites before you apply. Social Media Marketing & Management selects through an entrance exam (online form, English test and online interview, 70%) and your school grade (30%).
How many programmes are taught in English?
Two Bachelor's programmes are taught in English:
- Social Media Marketing & Management (B2 English required; English test and interview in the entrance exam)
- Print Media and Packaging Technologies (taught in English in the first years, with some German teaching in the third year)
All Master's programmes and the other Bachelor's programmes are taught in German.
