For German and EU/EEA students, Heidelberg's Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes remain free of tuition. Baden-Württemberg, however, is the one German state that still charges international students: since winter semester 2017/18, non-EU applicants pay a state tuition fee of 1,500 EUR per semester for Bachelor's, Staatsexamen and consecutive Master's programmes, at Heidelberg and at every other state university in Baden-Württemberg. A limited exemption quota and specific legal exemptions exist; applications for exemption are due by 15 July for the following winter semester or 15 January for the following summer semester.

On top of that, every student pays the semester contribution, currently 189.80 EUR for winter 2026/27, of which a big part funds the Studierendenwerk and student administration. Unlike most German universities, this figure does not include a nationwide semester ticket: Heidelberg's transport contract with the regional network ended in 2023 and was not replaced with the mandatory Deutschlandsemesterticket, so students buy their own transport pass separately.

A state tuition bill does not replace the proof-of-funds requirement either — for the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, on top of and separate from any tuition you owe the university.

Heidelberg does not publish non-EU application deadlines in one central table — deadlines are set per faculty and programme. Check the specific programme page in heiCO for its exact deadline.

Separately, if you're applying for exemption from the Baden-Württemberg tuition fee (see Fees above), that exemption application is due by 15 July for winter semester or 15 January for summer semester — this is not the admission deadline.

Heidelberg publishes its degree programmes taught in English on its own course-offering page, but does not state a single total count there. The language of instruction for essentially all Bachelor's programmes and most Master's programmes is German; English-taught options concentrate in a defined set of Master's programmes — subjects include American Studies, Transcultural Studies, Molecular Biosciences, Physics, Computational Linguistics, Data and Computer Science and Economics, among others — plus a small number of Bachelor's tracks such as American Studies. German language skills are not required to apply for the English-taught Master's programmes, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

The exact score is set per programme, so check your programme page before booking a test.

Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start: aim to be in Heidelberg a few weeks before term begins for city registration, a bank account and a room in one of Germany's tightest housing markets.

Heidelberg is one of Germany's tightest and most expensive student housing markets. Studierendenwerk Heidelberg runs roughly 4,300–4,500 hall places across about 65 buildings for a city of some 30,000 students, and was named among just eleven German Studierendenwerke reporting long halls waiting lists at the start of winter semester 2025/26. Apply for a hall place the day you're admitted and start searching the private market in parallel. Studierendenwerk-run halls cost 200–360 EUR/month but carry a long waiting list; the figures above are the private-market range to budget for.

The monthly payout from your blocked account is transferred to a German current account, which you open after you arrive.

Founded in 1386, Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university and one of the country's current Excellence Universities, with particular strength in the life sciences, medicine and the humanities. Its location gives international students an unusually dense research neighbourhood: the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the German Cancer Research Center and several Max Planck Institutes sit within or next to the university's Neuenheimer Feld science campus, alongside University Hospital Heidelberg, which makes lab placements and research assistant jobs comparatively easy to find here.

The city itself is small, around 160,000 people, and expensive relative to its size; it sits in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region next to Mannheim and Ludwigshafen, with Frankfurt International Airport about 40 minutes away by train.
