How much does University of Music Nuremberg cost for international students?
HfM Nürnberg's fee statute, in force since 1 January 2024, contains no tuition fee for degree students and no fee for students from outside the EU. Bavarian law allows universities to charge non-EU students, and some in Bavaria do; HfM is not among those charging or planning such fees in the state's 2025 overview.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Tuition, Bachelor and Master | No tuition fee |
| Semester contribution (everyone, from winter 2026/27) | 82 EUR per semester |
| Entrance examination fee (online application) | 50 EUR for the first application, 30 EUR for each further one; non-refundable |
The semester contribution does not include the Deutschlandticket; a reduced student ticket can be bought separately (currently 43 EUR a month in Bavaria). Because Bavarian law allows non-EU fees, check HfM's current fee rules before you apply.
Even without tuition, you need proof of funds for the student visa: 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account.
What are the application deadlines?
HfM publishes one application window for all applicants and no separate non-EU date; there is no summer intake. You apply through HfM's own online portal, not uni-assist. No language certificate is needed to apply, but you must show German at enrolment.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor and Master (most programmes) | Winter (October) | Application window usually 15 January to 15 March; entrance examinations in May |
| Master International Opera Studio and other programmes with their own procedure | Winter | See the programme page |
Late or incomplete applications are not considered. Applicants with a Chinese school or university certificate need an APS certificate at enrolment. Check the current application window on HfM's application page.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No full-time HfM degree programme is taught in English. The Master Interdisciplinary Music Research is taught in English (English B2), but it is largely online (entirely online in the Human-Animal Studies focus, with two in-person weeks per semester in the Artificial Intelligence focus), so it is not counted here and is not a route to a student visa.
HfM offers 76 full-time degree programmes in German: 49 Bachelor of Music programmes (most subjects in an artistic and an artistic-pedagogical track) and 27 Master of Music programmes. The dual Master's (International Opera Studio, Orchestra), the part-time Music Education Master's and the master class are not counted. German requirements at enrolment: B2 for artistic Bachelor's, C1 for artistic-pedagogical Bachelor's and Master's, and B1 for most artistic Master's.
