How much does HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management cost for international students?
HHL is a private business school, so unlike most VisaFlow partner universities it is not tuition-free. HHL also does not offer a Bachelor's degree: international students apply directly to a Master's or MBA program, and the tuition fee covers the full program from the outset, not a per-semester rate.
On top of tuition, every student in Leipzig, at HHL and at the city's public universities alike, pays a semester contribution to Studentenwerk Leipzig. For winter 2026/27 the base contribution is EUR 90.00 plus a EUR 4.00 mobility-fund charge. HHL students additionally pay for the Deutschland-Semesterticket, which for the wider Leipzig student body cost EUR 226.80 for winter 2026/27.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Master in Management (M.Sc.), full program | EUR 38,500 (early-bird discounts of up to EUR 4,500 for early submission) |
| MBA, full program (Fast Track or Advanced Track) | EUR 42,500 (early-bird discounts of up to EUR 6,000 for early submission) |
| Semester contribution (base + mobility fund, everyone) | approx. EUR 94.00 per semester |
A program this expensive still needs a visa built on proof of funds for living costs, usually shown through a blocked account, separate from how the tuition itself is paid or financed.
What are the application deadlines?
HHL runs a single annual intake, in September, for both the Master in Management and the MBA. The deadlines below apply to applicants from outside the EU; those who need a student visa face an earlier cut-off than EU applicants and non-EU applicants who do not require a visa.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline (non-EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Master in Management (M.Sc.) | Winter (September) | 31 May (visa required); 30 June (no visa required) |
| MBA (Fast Track / Advanced Track) | Winter (September) | 31 May (visa required); 30 June (no visa required) |
Early-bird deadlines (30 November, 31 January, 31 March) apply only to a tuition-fee discount, not to eligibility.
How do you apply to HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management?
Pick your program and check its track
Choose between the Master in Management, its Finance or Consulting tracks, the Master in Entrepreneurship or Finance, or the MBA's Fast Track or Advanced Track. All are taught in English and set their own eligibility profile around prior degree and work experience.
Register in the HHL application portal
Create your account and submit the mandatory documents: CV, letter of motivation, high-school diploma, Bachelor's transcript and a passport photo. Further documents, including proof of work experience, the degree certificate and an admission test score, can follow later in the process.
Submit before your deadline, then keep an eye on early-bird dates
31 May for non-EU applicants who need a visa, 30 June otherwise. Submitting earlier, by 30 November, 31 January or 31 March, unlocks a tuition-fee discount but is not required for eligibility.
Interview, decision, then start your visa
Shortlisted applicants complete a roughly 45-minute virtual admission interview with an HHL professor, and HHL communicates its decision within 7 to 10 days. Non-EU applicants who need a visa are strongly advised to apply as early as possible, since the visa appointment and relocation both take time before the September start.
How many programmes are taught in English?
Every one of HHL's ten Master's and MBA programs, spanning general management, finance, entrepreneurship and consulting, is taught fully in English. Most are Master's-level; the school does not offer a Bachelor's degree at all. Since HHL has no Bachelor's catalogue for German to dominate, a student can complete their entire degree at HHL without German, though the school also offers German-language courses alongside the MBA for students who want them.
Which English certificates does HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management accept?
HHL asks for a TOEFL iBT score of 90 or an IELTS score of 7.0, and a Bachelor's degree completed in English serves as a waiver instead of a test score. Because the GMAT, GRE or HHL's own entry test is also part of admission, the English certificate is only one part of a wider testing requirement, unlike at most public universities where it stands alone.
| Certificate | Typical range |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 90 |
| Waiver | Bachelor's degree completed in English |
About HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management
Founded in 1898 by the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and re-established under private management in 1992, HHL is one of the world's oldest business schools and the first business faculty in German-speaking Europe. It is a private, state-approved institution authorised to award doctoral and habilitation degrees, accredited internationally by AACSB and nationally by the German Accreditation Council (ACQUIN).
HHL is small and specialised by design, with around 800 students across Master's, MBA and doctoral programs, a network of over 140 partner universities for terms abroad, and close ties to Leipzig's growing logistics, automotive and technology sector, home to Porsche, BMW, DHL and Amazon facilities. Its Leipzig Leadership Model puts entrepreneurship and leadership development at the centre of every program, and HHL has been ranked Germany's top entrepreneurial university for seven years running.
Frequently asked questions
Does HHL Leipzig use uni-assist?
No. Applications go through HHL's own portal, apply.hhl.de. That means no uni-assist account and no uni-assist processing fee, though HHL charges substantial tuition of its own, which uni-assist universities generally do not.
Do I need German to study at HHL?
No. All ten of HHL's Master's and MBA programs are taught fully in English, and HHL has no Bachelor's catalogue in German for you to need. The MBA also offers optional German-language courses alongside the program for students who want to pick it up.
What does HHL require when you enrol?
Proof of German health insurance, your admission letter, your passport and residence documents, and certified copies of your qualifications. The insurance certificate is the one people underestimate: it has to come from a German insurer, and public student cover costs about EUR 125 per month. See our health insurance comparison.
Does an English-taught Bachelor's degree replace the language test?
Yes, HHL accepts a Bachelor's degree completed in English as a waiver. A GMAT, GRE or HHL Entry Test score is still required separately for admission.
What is the semester contribution and what does it cover?
Around EUR 94 per semester for the Studentenwerk Leipzig base contribution and mobility fund, on top of a separate Deutschland-Semesterticket charge. It is on top of tuition, not instead of it, since HHL is a private school.
