How much does University of Arts in Social Contexts Ottersberg cost for international students?
HKS is a private, state-recognised university and charges tuition fees. Fees are charged for full semesters and paid in six monthly instalments, including during the semester break. The fee schedule names no separate rates for non-EU students.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor, Arts in Social Contexts | 425 EUR per month |
| Bachelor, Social Work (dual) | 620 EUR per month, paid by the placement organisation |
| Master, Arts and Community, full-time (one year) | 458 EUR per month |
| Master, Arts and Community, part-time (two years) | 229 EUR per month |
| Admission fee (one-off) | 95 EUR |
| Enrolment fee (one-off) | 180 EUR |
| AStA fee | 52 EUR one-off, plus 1 EUR per month |
| Assessment of foreign certificates not recognised by ZAB or APS (one-off) | 650 EUR (120 EUR where verifiable in EU member state databases) |
| Deutschlandsemesterticket (everyone) | 37.80 EUR per month |
There is no semester contribution as at public universities. The fees are from the schedule for students enrolling from winter 2025/26; HKS may adjust them with two months' notice, so confirm the current amounts with HKS.
Tuition fees do not replace the proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, on top of the money you pay HKS in tuition.
What are the application deadlines?
HKS publishes one deadline for all applicants and no separate date for non-EU applicants. Both programmes start in winter only. You apply directly to HKS through its online form; uni-assist is not used.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline (non-EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor, Arts in Social Contexts (all specialisations) | Winter (October) | Usually 31 May |
| Master, Arts and Community | Winter (October) | Usually 31 May |
The date for the next intake had not been published in October 2026, and HKS has accepted late applications in the past, so confirm the current deadline with HKS. If your certificates are not recognised through ZAB or APS, HKS charges an assessment fee, so start early if you need a visa.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No programme at HKS is taught in English. International applicants need German at C1 level (DSH 2, TestDaF 4, telc C1 Hochschule or Goethe C1) for the Bachelor's specialisations and the Master's, and B1 for the Fine Arts specialisation.
Two full-time degree programmes are taught in German: the Bachelor's in Arts in Social Contexts (five specialisations) and the Master's in Arts and Community. The dual Bachelor's in Social Work requires a placement organisation in Germany and is not counted here.
