How much does State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart cost for international students?
HMDK Stuttgart charges students from outside the EU and EEA tuition of 1,500 EUR per semester, because Baden-Württemberg state law sets this fee at all public universities in the state; it applies to Bachelor's and Master's alike. Exemptions apply, for example for holders of a settlement permit, recognised refugees and people who have already completed a Bachelor's and a Master's in Germany.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's, non-EU | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Second degree | 650 EUR per semester |
| Entrance examination application, per programme | 50 EUR, one-off, not refunded |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 176.50 EUR per semester (96.50 EUR Studierendenwerk Stuttgart + 80 EUR administrative fee) |
The semester contribution includes no transport ticket or Deutschlandticket. The amount can change slightly each semester, so check it in the student portal.
Tuition fees do not replace the proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, on top of the tuition you pay the university.
What are the application deadlines?
Admission to almost every programme requires an entrance examination, and the deadline is for registering for that examination. HMDK publishes one set of dates for all applicants, with no separate date for non-EU applicants. You apply only through HMDK's own online portal (HISinOne), not uni-assist; documents sent by post must arrive within seven days of the deadline (postmark counts).
| Degree | Intake | Registration period |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's (entrance examination) | Summer (April) | 1 October to 2 November |
| Bachelor's and Master's (entrance examination) | Winter (October) | Usually 1 March to 1 April |
Not every programme admits in both semesters, and the dates for winter 2027/28 had not been published as of October 2026, so confirm them on HMDK's important dates page. Applicants from China and India need an APS certificate.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No programme at HMDK Stuttgart is taught in English. Bachelor's and Master's programmes require German at B2.2 (C2 for the Master's in Music Education Research), with proof by the end of the first semester at the latest.
