How much does Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre Leipzig cost for international students?
HMT Leipzig is a public university, but under its fee regulations it charges students who are not citizens of an EU member state a fee of 1,800 EUR per semester, on top of the semester contribution. EU students pay no tuition. HMT Leipzig offers a scholarship programme for students who pay the non-EU fee.
Every student also pays the semester contribution of 330.80 EUR for winter 2026/27, of which 226.80 EUR is the Deutschlandsemesterticket; the rest goes to the Studentenwerk Leipzig, a mobility fund and the student council. Applicants pay an application fee of 50 EUR.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor and Master, non-EU students | 1,800 EUR per semester |
| Bachelor and Master, EU students | No tuition fees |
| Application fee | 50 EUR |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 330.80 EUR per semester (winter 2026/27) |
Tuition fees come on top of the proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
| Programme | Intake | Online application |
|---|---|---|
| Music, music teacher training, Dramaturgy | Winter (October) | 1 to 31 March (videos and documents by early April; auditions late May to early June) |
| Acting (Schauspiel) | Winter (October) | 1 to 30 November of the previous year (auditions February to March) |
| Master's in Musicology | Winter (October) | 1 to 31 May |

HMT Leipzig publishes one set of application periods for all applicants; there is no separate non-EU date. Applications are online only, followed by an entrance examination (audition). Not every programme admits every semester, so check the programme page. Non-EU applicants usually travel on a student applicant visa for the audition, which the immigration office converts into a student visa after admission; a tourist visa cannot be converted.
How many programmes are taught in English?
None. No degree programme at HMT Leipzig is taught in English. International applicants must prove good German as well as artistic aptitude in the entrance examination; HMT does not name a specific level, so check the programme page.
