Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

hmt Rostock does not use uni-assist: admission runs through the university's own online portal and a mandatory artistic entrance examination, not a document-based review service. Bachelor and Master study carry no tuition fees, but the application itself is not free — a non-refundable €50 processing fee is charged for the entrance examination, win or lose. Unlike the usual 15 July cut-off, online applications for the winter semester run from 1 March to 15 April, and this window applies to EU and non-EU applicants alike, because admission is decided by audition rather than by a separate non-EU document check.

How much does Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock cost for international students?

ItemCost for international students
BachelorNo course fees
Master (first degree)No course fees
Master (continuing education)Fees apply, set under the university's fee regulations (Hochschulgebührensatzung, §8(2))

Every enrolled student pays the semester contribution instead, which funds the student council, the Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar, and a public transport pass on the Warnow network (VVW Semesterticket) shared with the University of Rostock.

No tuition doesn't mean no proof of funds: for the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

DegreeIntakeDeadline
All degrees (except MA Opera Studio)Winter (October)15 April (window opens 1 March)
MA Opera StudioWinter (October)15 November of the preceding year
All degreesSummer (April)15 November of the preceding year

hmt Rostock does not publish a separate, earlier deadline for non-EU applicants. Because admission is decided by an in-house artistic entrance examination rather than a document-legalisation process, the same online-application window applies to every applicant, EU and non-EU alike.

How do you apply to Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock?

Through hmt Rostock's own online portal, not uni-assist. There is no uni-assist account or processing fee, but the application is not free either — a non-refundable €50 fee for the entrance examination is charged regardless of the outcome, and it must be paid before the application is processed.

1

Pick your programme and check its entrance exam requirements

Every degree course sets its own artistic requirements, published as "Entrance examination requirements" on that course's own page; some also set a compulsory piano or singing component.

2

Register in the portal

Create your account at service.hmt-rostock.de and upload your documents and audition video within the application window; you'll receive an activation code by email the first time you log in.

3

Submit before your deadline

15 April for the winter semester (window opens 1 March), 15 November of the preceding year for the summer semester and for MA Opera Studio. Pay the €50 entrance-examination fee alongside your application.

4

Then start to prepare your visa

Attend your entrance examination on the date given with your invitation, wait for the result on the portal, and begin your visa appointment once you hold your admission notice. Applicants who are not native German speakers also sit a mandatory German C-test on the same day.

How many programmes are taught in English?

hmt Rostock does not publish any degree programme taught fully in English. Bachelor, Master, Staatsexamen and Konzertexamen study in music, composition, musicology, teaching and drama is conducted in German throughout, and every applicant who is not a native German speaker must pass a mandatory C-test in German as part of the entrance examination, with no waiver for having studied in Germany before. Because training centres on ensemble work, coaching and stage practice conducted in German, everyday German is essential from the first semester rather than merely useful outside class.

Which English certificates does Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock accept?

CertificateTypical range
German C-test (in-house, mandatory)Level set per degree course; no centrally published minimum
External German certificates (Goethe, telc, etc.)Not accepted as a substitute for the C-test
English certificates (IELTS, TOEFL)Not required; hmt Rostock has no English-taught degree programmes

What every applicant who is not a native German speaker must clear is the mandatory C-test in German, sat on the day of the artistic entrance exam. The exact level is set per degree course, so check the "Entrance examination requirements" on your chosen course page before the exam date.

When does the semester start?

SemesterSemester periodLecture period
Summer 20261 Apr 2026 – 30 Sep 20267 Apr 2026 – 17 Jul 2026
Winter 2026/271 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027

Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start: international students need time before term for city registration, a bank account and finding a room in a market with real competition.

About Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock

A small, specialised state academy for music, drama and music education rather than a broad-subject university, hmt Rostock traces its roots to a 1947 music college and a 1968 drama school and took its present form in 1994. It is housed in the Katharinenstift, a former Franciscan monastery in the heart of Rostock's old town, and stages more than 300 public performances a year, giving students working ties to the Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock, the Volkstheater and the city's opera house for practical, on-the-job training.

Rostock itself is a Hanseatic port city on the Baltic coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For a non-EU applicant, the defining fact is that admission turns entirely on an artistic entrance examination rather than on academic credential evaluation, which is why hmt Rostock does not use uni-assist and why the application timeline looks different from a comprehensive university's.

Frequently asked questions

Does hmt Rostock use uni-assist?

No. Admission runs entirely through hmt Rostock's own portal (service.hmt-rostock.de) and a mandatory artistic entrance examination.

Do I need German to study at hmt Rostock?

Yes, for effectively the whole catalogue. hmt Rostock publishes no English-taught degree, and every applicant who is not a native German speaker must pass a mandatory C-test in German as part of the entrance exam, with no waiver for prior German-taught study.

What does hmt Rostock require when you enrol?

Alongside your admission notice, passport and residence documents, you'll need proof of German health insurance (public cover runs about 125 EUR per month) and confirmation that the entrance-exam fee was paid. See our health insurance comparison.

Does an English-taught Bachelor replace the language test?

Not in the way it does at English-medium universities. hmt Rostock's requirement is a German C-test, not an English certificate, and there is no published waiver route based on holding a foreign degree, English-taught or otherwise.

What is the semester contribution and what does it cover?

It includes a public-transport pass through the VVW Semesterticket agreement for the Warnow network, plus contributions to the Studierendenwerk Rostock-Wismar and the student council.
