How much does University of Music and Performing Arts Munich cost for international students?
HMTM charges no tuition for its Bachelor's and Master's programmes. Bavarian law has allowed public universities to charge non-EU students since 2023, but HMTM's fee statute lists fees only for the entrance examination, junior and talent programmes, guest students and continuing education, not for degree programmes.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | No tuition fees |
| Master | No tuition fees |
| Semester contribution (everyone, winter 2026/27) | 97 EUR per semester, paid to the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern |
| Entrance examination fee | 50 EUR, plus 10 EUR for each additional programme |
The semester contribution does not include a transport ticket, so you buy the Deutschlandticket yourself if you need it. The Post-Master Certificate (Meisterklasse) costs 2,097 EUR per semester including the contribution. Because Bavarian law allows non-EU fees, check HMTM's current fee rules before you apply.
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account.
What are the application deadlines?
HMTM publishes one set of dates for all applicants. You apply through HMTM's online application portal (BZM portal), and the deadline is a strict cut-off. Many programmes first require a video for pre-selection, uploaded with the application; successful applicants are then invited to the on-site entrance examination in Munich, which cannot be replaced by a virtual examination.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor and Master (most programmes) | Winter (entrance examination in Munich in June) | 5 March |
| Master Arts and Music Management, Digital Communication in the Music and Entertainment Industry, Arts and Cultural Journalism, Music Mediation, Sound Art | Winter | 31 May |
| Dance and the programmes run with the Theaterakademie August Everding | Programme-specific | See the programme page |
Every applicant pays 50 EUR to register for the entrance examination, plus 10 EUR for each additional programme; the fee is not refunded. Applicants from China also need an APS certificate at enrolment.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No HMTM degree programme is taught in English; the language of instruction is German. International applicants whose native language is not German must present a German certificate at enrolment: B1 for artistic Bachelor's programmes; B2 for artistic-pedagogical programmes, teacher training, Music Theory and the Master's in Choral Conducting and Music Theatre/Opera; C1 for the Master's in Arts and Music Management, Digital Communication, Music Mediation and Arts and Cultural Journalism. Most postgraduate artistic Master's do not require a German certificate. HMTM offers German courses before and during the semester.
HMTM offers 109 degree programmes with an entrance examination: 58 Bachelor of Music programmes (artistic and artistic-pedagogical tracks for each instrument, plus Jazz and Music Theory), 5 Bachelor of Arts programmes (including Dance, Acting and Musical), 38 Master of Music programmes and 8 Master of Arts programmes. State-examination teacher training, the junior programmes, the Meisterklasse certificates and the doctorate are not counted.
