How much does Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences cost for international students?
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | No tuition fees |
| Master (consecutive) | No tuition fees |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 401 EUR per semester (winter 2026/27) |
Hesse funds its public universities without charging tuition fees, for EU and non-EU students alike — the same as almost everywhere in Germany outside Baden-Württemberg. That applies to Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes at h_da.
What every student pays is the semester contribution, and it is not a fee for teaching. A large part of the 401 EUR funds the nationwide Deutschlandticket that the student body negotiated for all h_da students, covering public transport across the whole country. The amount is set each semester, so it changes.
No tuition doesn't mean no proof of funds: for the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor, open admission | Winter (October) | 1 September |
| Bachelor, restricted (NC) | Winter (October) | 15 July (some programmes extended to 15 September) |
| Bachelor, restricted (NC) | Summer (April) | 15 January |
| Master, open admission | Winter (October) | 1 September |
| Master, open admission | Summer (April) | 1 March |
| Master, restricted (NC) | Winter (October) | 15 July |
h_da publishes one set of deadlines split by admission type and by whether the applicant holds a German-recognised entrance qualification, not by EU/non-EU status. Applicants with a foreign certificate — which covers most non-EU applicants — must also register with uni-assist. A small number of Master's programmes (e.g. Architecture, Interior Architecture, Animation and Game) run on their own separate dates.
How do you apply to Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences?
Pick your programme and check its language
Check whether the programme is taught in English or German, whether it has restricted admission (NC), and whether it has a summer intake. Requirements are set per programme, not centrally.
Register with uni-assist
Create your uni-assist account and upload your certificates, transcripts and language certificate. uni-assist forwards a positive assessment to h_da electronically. Processing costs about 75 EUR for the first application, 30 EUR for each further one.
Submit before your deadline
1 September for most open-admission Bachelor's and Master's programmes, 15 July for NC and restricted programmes (winter intake). Certified copies and translations can take weeks to obtain, so start collecting documents well before the window opens.
Then start to prepare your visa
You need the h_da admission letter for your visa appointment, and appointments in peak season take six to twelve weeks.
Applicants without a German-recognised entrance qualification must apply through uni-assist e.V. rather than directly through h_da's own portal; applicants with a German-recognised qualification apply directly through h_da's own portal (my.h-da / eCampus) instead.
How many programmes are taught in English?
h_da runs about 10 degree programmes fully in English, out of more than 70 in total, mostly concentrated in engineering, computer science and business, and mostly at Master's level. You can study the English-taught programmes without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.
Which English certificates does Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences accept?
| Certificate | Typical range |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 80 (representative mid-tier; ranges from 57 to 88 across listed tiers) |
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 (representative mid-tier; ranges from 5.0 to 6.5 across listed tiers) |
| Cambridge | BEC Vantage (B2) / BEC Higher (C1) |
| telc | B1 Business up to B2, technical or business purposes |
h_da's certificate-of-proficiency page lists several accepted tests at different levels rather than one flat cut-off, and the exact score is set per programme. Certificates are generally expected to be recent; check the requirement for your specific programme before booking a test.
When does the semester start?
| Semester | Semester period | Lecture period |
|---|---|---|
| Winter 2026/27 | 1 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 | 12 Oct 2026 – 5 Feb 2027 |
| Summer 2027 | 1 Apr 2027 – 30 Sep 2027 | 5 Apr 2027 – 16 Jul 2027 |
Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start: the winter semester formally begins on 1 October, but lectures start on 12 October 2026, and you'll want to be in Darmstadt a few weeks earlier for city registration, a bank account and a room.
About Hochschule Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences
Hesse's largest university of applied sciences, with roots going back to 1876 as a shared technical school with TU Darmstadt and independent since 1971. Its strengths are engineering, computer science, media and design, business and social work, and it is part of the European University of Technology (EUt+) alliance, giving students mobility across eight partner institutions in Europe.
It sits close to regional research and industry, including Fraunhofer institutes and the European Space Operations Centre (ESA/ESOC) in Darmstadt, which is why internships and working student jobs are easy to find here. Darmstadt itself is in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region, about 30 minutes from Frankfurt by train.
Frequently asked questions
Does Hochschule Darmstadt use uni-assist?
Yes, for applicants without a German-recognised entrance qualification, which covers most non-EU applicants regardless of nationality. Applicants with a German Abitur or an equivalent German-recognised qualification apply directly through h_da's own portal instead.
Do I need German to study at h_da?
Not for the roughly 10 English-taught programmes, but you do need proof of English at the level your programme asks for, typically around IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. Most of the wider catalogue of 70-plus programmes is taught in German, so check the language of instruction of your programme first.
Is Hochschule Darmstadt really free for international students?
Yes for tuition, for EU and non-EU students alike, because Hesse does not charge tuition fees at its public universities. Everyone pays the semester contribution instead — 401 EUR for winter 2026/27, most of which funds the nationwide Deutschlandticket.
What does h_da require when you enrol?
Proof of German health insurance, your admission letter, your passport and residence documents, and certified copies of your qualifications. The insurance certificate is the one people underestimate: it has to come from a German insurer, and public student cover costs about 125 EUR per month.
What is the semester contribution and what does it cover?
401 EUR for winter 2026/27. A large part funds the nationwide Deutschlandticket that h_da's student body negotiated for all students; the rest covers the Studierendenwerk and the AStA. It is set each semester, so it changes.
