Hochschule Fulda for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Seven Bachelor's programmes, including Food Technology and International Business and Management, require you to register separately at hochschulstart.de before applying through uni-assist, an extra step most German universities do not add. Applicants with a foreign school-leaving certificate or a foreign first degree face an earlier non-EU deadline than EU and German applicants on several named programmes, for example 31 May instead of 30 September for the Master's in Data Science.

How do you apply to Hochschule Fulda?

Applicants with a foreign school-leaving certificate or a foreign first degree apply through uni-assist, regardless of nationality, for a processing cost of 75 EUR for the first programme and 30 EUR for each further one. Applicants with a German qualification can apply directly through Horstl, the university's own portal, at no extra cost.

1

Pick your programme and check its language

Check whether the programme is taught in English or German, whether it has restricted admission (and, for seven Bachelor's programmes, whether it also runs through hochschulstart.de), and whether it has a summer intake.

2

Register in the portal

Register in My assist for uni-assist applications, or directly in Horstl if you hold a German qualification. Upload certified scans of your certificates, transcripts and language evidence.

3

Submit before your deadline

The basic deadlines are 15 July or 30 September for winter-semester Bachelor's and Master's programmes, but several named programmes close weeks earlier for applicants with a foreign degree.

4

Then start to prepare your visa

Applicants from China, Vietnam and India must include an APS certificate with their uni-assist application; applicants from Pakistan must include an HEC verification. Admitted applicants are notified by email only, through the same account used to apply.

Open the international applicants page at hs-fulda.de.

How many programmes are taught in English?

Hochschule Fulda does not publish a single total count of English-taught programmes on its own site. Named programmes taught fully in English include the Master's in Global Software Development, Data Science, International Management, Human Rights Studies in Politics, Law and Society, and International Food Business and Consumer Studies, plus the Bachelor's in International Business and Management and Global Health; several further Bachelor's programmes such as Food Technology and Industrial Biotechnology are only partly taught in English and still require German. Roughly half of the named English-medium programmes are at Bachelor's level and half at Master's, concentrated in business, food and health sciences and computer science. The fully English-taught programmes can be studied without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

Which English certificates does Hochschule Fulda accept?

Hochschule Fulda sets English requirements per programme against the Common European Framework of Reference, most commonly at B2 for English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes. Certificates must not be older than three years at the time of submission, counted from the end of the year of issue, and Duolingo is not accepted. Applicants who earned their entrance qualification or a degree at an English-medium institution are exempt from providing a certificate at all.

CertificateTypical range
TOEFL iBT72 points or better (B2); up to 95 (C1) for some programmes
IELTS Academic5.5 or better (B2); up to 7.0 (C1) for some programmes
Cambridge EnglishB2 First, grade B or C or better
TOEICListening & Reading 785+, Speaking 160+, Writing 150+ (B2)

The exact level is set per programme, so check your programme page before booking a test.

About Hochschule Fulda

Founded in 1974 as the fifth state University of Applied Sciences in Hesse, Hochschule Fulda has been, since 2016, the first German University of Applied Sciences authorised to award doctoral degrees. Its eight departments span engineering, computer science, business, law, nutrition, health, and society and culture, with particular strengths in nutrition and food science, public and global health, and renewable energy.

The compact, walkable campus sits in the historic town centre of Fulda, a small city of around 68,000 people roughly 50 minutes by train from Frankfurt's international airport, keeping travel to the rest of Germany and Europe easy while daily life stays close and manageable for a first-time international student.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hochschule Fulda use uni-assist?

Yes, if you hold a foreign school-leaving certificate or a foreign first degree, regardless of nationality. If you hold a German qualification, you apply directly through Horstl, the university's own portal, without uni-assist or its processing fee.

Do I need German to study at Hochschule Fulda?

Not for the fully English-taught programmes, but you still need proof of English at the level your programme sets, usually IELTS 5.5 to 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 72 to 95. Most of the catalogue is taught in German, so check your programme's language of instruction first.

What does Hochschule Fulda require when you enrol?

A digital notification of German statutory health insurance sent directly by your insurer to the university, your admission documents, and any outstanding documents flagged in Horstl. Enrolment is not possible without the digital insurance confirmation; paper certificates are not accepted.

Does an English-taught Bachelor replace the language test?

Applicants who earned their entrance qualification or a degree at an English-medium institution are exempt from providing a certificate at all. This is broader than some universities, which limit the waiver to a short list of English-speaking countries; confirm your case against the language requirements page.

What is the semester contribution and what does it cover?

404.80 EUR for winter 2026/27 on-campus programmes, made up of 118 EUR for the Studierendenwerk, 10 EUR for the AStA, 226.80 EUR for the Deutschlandsemesterticket and a 50 EUR administration fee. Distance-learning programmes pay 119.00 EUR without the ticket.
