Tuition itself is free at HKA for EU and EEA students, because the state of Baden-Württemberg funds the university. Non-EU and non-EEA applicants are the exception: a state law in force since the 2017/18 winter semester requires them to pay a tuition fee of 1,500 EUR per semester for Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, with exemptions for Bildungsinländer, recognised refugees, and a handful of other residence-based cases.

Everyone, regardless of nationality, also pays the semester contribution, and it is not a fee for teaching. At HKA this is currently 194.70 EUR per semester, made up of a 108.70 EUR Studierendenwerk fee, a 70 EUR administrative fee, and a 16 EUR contribution to the student body (AStA). The amount is set by the university and can change each semester.

Whatever your tuition status, the student visa still requires proof of funds. You need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and non-EU applicants must budget for the 1,500 EUR per semester tuition fee on top of that.

These are the deadlines that apply to non-EU applicants. HKA sets its application windows per programme and by admission type (open or admission-restricted) rather than as one university-wide date, and unlike some universities there is no separate, earlier non-EU deadline distinct from the EU date; both groups apply by the same day for a given programme.

Application for a regular study place at HKA is exclusively online, through the university's own HISinOne portal rather than uni-assist. For the general application track there is no separate handling fee, unlike the roughly 75 EUR uni-assist charges elsewhere, though some non-EU applicants without a German university entrance qualification still need a separate academic recognition certificate (ASK) before or alongside applying.

HKA teaches one Bachelor's and three Master's programmes fully in English: Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (Bachelor), and Geomatics, Sensor Systems Technology, and the Tricontinental Master in Global Studies (all Master's). That means a Bachelor applicant who wants to study in English currently has one option, in electrical engineering, while most of HKA's English-taught catalogue sits at Master's level. The remainder of HKA's programmes are taught in German. You can study the English-taught programmes without German at enrolment, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work, and the authorities, and the English-taught Bachelor's itself still requires an A1 German certificate within six weeks of the start of lectures.

For the one English-taught Bachelor's programme, HKA requires a TOEFL iBT score of at least 83, or an equivalent English test; the certificate must be available by enrolment, not necessarily at application. Two things catch international applicants out here: even though the programme is taught in English, an A1 German certificate is still required within six weeks of the start of lectures, and non-EU applicants without a German university entrance qualification need a separate academic recognition certificate (ASK) alongside their English test.

Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start. HKA's winter semester runs administratively from 1 September to 28/29 February, but teaching typically begins toward the end of September, several weeks after the semester technically starts, so plan to be in Karlsruhe well before lectures for city registration, a bank account, and a room.

Karlsruhe is a large student city, with roughly 43,000 students across its universities, including more than 7,000 at HKA alone, so competition for housing is real, especially at the start of the winter semester. Karlsruhe ranks among the German cities with the tightest student housing supply: the city estimates a shortfall of 800 to 1,000 halls places against recommended provision, so apply for a hall place through Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe as soon as you are admitted and search privately in parallel.
