Kempten University of Applied Sciences for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Kempten charges no tuition fees for Bachelor's or Master's study, in line with the Bavarian norm, but since Winter Semester 2025/26 it adds a service fee of 500 EUR per semester for non-EU students newly enrolling on one of its four English-taught degree programmes, on top of the standard semester fee. Only students who start in or after Winter Semester 2025/26 pay it; the deadline and application route otherwise follow the normal German pattern (uni-assist verification, 15 July for winter).

How much does Kempten University of Applied Sciences cost for international students?

ItemCost for international students
BachelorNo tuition fees
MasterNo tuition fees
Semester fee (everyone)approx. 115 EUR per semester (85 EUR student union + 30 EUR Allgäu transport pass)
Service fee, non-EU students on the 4 English-taught programmes only500 EUR per semester, in addition to the semester fee, from Winter Semester 2025/26

Every student pays the semester fee, which is not a fee for teaching — it covers student union membership and a local transport pass for the Allgäu region, not the nationwide Deutschlandticket that most other universities include, so a Kempten semester ticket does not extend to travel outside the region.

The service fee applies only to non-EU students newly enrolling on the Bachelor in International Engineering or one of the three English-taught Master's programmes (Electrical Engineering, Global Business Development, Corporate Sustainability & Sustainable Finance). It funds dedicated mentoring and integration support for these students; students already enrolled before Winter Semester 2025/26 are exempt.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds: for the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

DegreeIntakeDeadline (non-EU)
BachelorWinter (October)15 July
MasterWinter (October)15 July
Bachelor / MasterSummer (April)15 January

Kempten does not set an earlier deadline for non-EU applicants: the same procedures and deadlines apply to international applicants as to German applicants for the same degree programme. For Winter Semester 2026/2027, the deadline is 15 July 2026 for both Bachelor's and Master's programmes.

A separate, later date applies only to the uni-assist paperwork: the preliminary review documentation (VPD) must reach the Academic Registry by 31 July for a winter start or 15 January for a summer start, which is after the application deadline itself. Proof of language proficiency can follow later, by 30 September (winter) or 14 March (summer).

How do you apply to Kempten University of Applied Sciences?

1

Pick your programme and check its language

Check whether the programme is taught in English or German (only 4 programmes are fully in English), whether it has restricted admission, and whether it runs a summer intake.

2

Register with uni-assist, then in MeinCampus

Register early at uni-assist.de and choose the VPD procedure for your Bachelor's certificate (Bachelor applicants) or Bachelor's degree (Master applicants); it takes about six weeks. Applicants from China, Vietnam or Mongolia also submit an APS certificate through uni-assist. Then register and apply in MeinCampus.

3

Submit before your deadline

15 July for Winter Semester 2026/2027, Bachelor and Master alike. Forward uni-assist's VPD email to the Academic Registry by 31 July (winter) or 15 January (summer) — this document deadline falls after the application deadline itself. Proof of language proficiency can follow later, by 30 September (winter) or 14 March (summer).

4

Then start to prepare your visa

Once admitted, use your admission letter to book your visa appointment; appointments in peak season can take six to twelve weeks.

Applications are submitted through MeinCampus, the university's own portal, but before that your degree certificate has to be verified by uni-assist, which charges its own fee (about 75 EUR for a first application, 30 EUR for each further one). The one exception is the Master's in Electrical Engineering, where the Academic Registry checks the Bachelor's certificate itself and uni-assist is not required.

How many programmes are taught in English?

Kempten runs 4 degree programmes fully in English, out of roughly 47 study programmes in total: the Bachelor in International Engineering, and the Master's programmes in Electrical Engineering, Global Business Development, and Corporate Sustainability & Sustainable Finance.

Three of the four are Master's programmes, concentrated in engineering and international business, so a Bachelor applicant will need German for almost the entire catalogue. The English-taught Bachelor in International Engineering does include some German-language modules for students below level B1. You can study the four English-taught programmes without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

Which English certificates does Kempten University of Applied Sciences accept?

Proof of language proficiency can be submitted after the application deadline, by 30 September (winter) or 14 March (summer).

When does the semester start?

SemesterSemester periodLecture period
Winter 2026/271 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 20271 Oct 2026 – 22 Jan 2027 (lecture-free 24 Dec – 6 Jan)
Summer 202615 Mar 2026 – 30 Sep 202616 Mar 2026 – 10 Jul 2026

Unusually, Kempten's winter lectures begin on the same day as the semester itself, 1 October, rather than two weeks later as at many German universities, so there is less runway after arrival for city registration, a bank account and a room.

What does it cost to live in Kempten?

Kempten is a small city in the Allgäu with roughly 4,700 students at the university itself. Unlike bigger university cities, its Studierendenwerk-run halls are very limited — historically only about 38 places, run by Studierendenwerk Augsburg, which is also responsible for Augsburg and Neu-Ulm. Most students therefore look for private rooms from the outset rather than waiting for a halls place; apply to Studierendenwerk Augsburg the day you are admitted, and search the private market in parallel.

About Kempten University of Applied Sciences

The only state-run university of applied sciences in the Allgäu region, founded in 1977 and built around practice-oriented Bachelor's and Master's programmes rather than academic research; every degree includes at least one semester of industry experience. Its faculties span mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science and multimedia, business administration, tourism management, and social and health studies, with more than 100 partner universities worldwide for study-abroad options.

The compact campus sits in the Allgäu, at the foot of the Alps, within the Internationale Bodensee-Hochschule network of universities around Lake Constance, close to regional employers as well as larger Bavarian industry such as BMW, Audi and Airbus in the wider south-German corridor. It also holds its own right to award doctoral degrees through its Doctoral Studies Centre, unusual for a university of applied sciences of its size.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kempten University of Applied Sciences use uni-assist?

Yes for the document check: your Bachelor's certificate or degree has to be verified by uni-assist before you apply. The one exception is the Master's in Electrical Engineering, where the Academic Registry checks it directly. The application itself is then submitted through the university's own MeinCampus portal, not through uni-assist.

Do I need German to study at Kempten?

Not for the 4 English-taught programmes (1 Bachelor, 3 Master's), but you still need proof of English at the level your programme asks for. Almost the entire rest of the catalogue is taught in German, so check your programme's language before applying.

Does an English-taught Bachelor replace the language test?

This varies by programme — check your specific programme's requirements page to confirm whether the English-taught Bachelor waives the language test.

What is the semester fee and what does it cover?

The semester fee is approx. 115 EUR per semester: 85 EUR for student union membership and 30 EUR for a local Allgäu transport pass, not a nationwide Deutschlandticket.

Is there an extra fee for international students on English-taught programmes?

Yes, since Winter Semester 2025/26: 500 EUR per semester, on top of the standard semester fee, for non-EU students newly enrolling on the Bachelor in International Engineering or one of the three English-taught Master's programmes. Students already enrolled before that date do not pay it.
