How much does Cologne University of Catholic Theology (KHKT) cost for international students?
KHKT is a state-recognised university run by the Catholic Church and charges no tuition fees, for EU and non-EU students alike.
Students pay a semester contribution of 275 EUR (2025/26), of which 208.80 EUR is the Deutschlandsemesterticket. The rest is the student body (AStA) contribution of 16.70 EUR and an administrative fee. The amount for winter 2026/27 has not been published yet and may change with the ticket price.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Magister Theologiae, Licentiate, Bachelor | No tuition fees |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 275 EUR per semester (2025/26) |
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Magister Theologiae, Licentiate, Bachelor | Winter | 30 September (period from 1 August) |
| Magister Theologiae, Licentiate, Bachelor | Summer | See the programme page |
KHKT publishes one set of deadlines for all applicants; there is no separate non-EU date. Programmes start in both winter and summer; KHKT has not published an exact summer date, so confirm it with the study advisory service before applying. Applicants apply directly to KHKT and are first invited to an initial conversation, online or in person. If you need a visa, apply well before the deadline.
How many programmes are taught in English?
None. All programmes at KHKT are taught in German, so international applicants need strong German. KHKT offers the Magister Theologiae in Catholic Theology (10 semesters), a postgraduate Licentiate in Catholic Theology, which requires a completed theology degree, and a Bachelor's programme in Theologische Diakonie und Missionarische Katechese.
