Saxony-Anhalt funds Martin Luther University as a public university, so there are no tuition fees for Bachelor's or consecutive Master's programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike. In 2026 the state's governing CDU proposed introducing tuition fees for non-EU students; as of September 2026 nothing has been decided.

What every student pays instead is the semester contribution. For winter 2026/27 this includes at least 226.80 EUR for the Deutschlandsemesterticket, the nationwide transport pass, on top of a 90 EUR Studentenwerk Halle fee.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

Martin Luther University publishes one application timetable for anyone applying with a qualification earned outside Germany, run through uni-assist; it does not name a separate non-EU deadline. For Master's programmes that timetable closes earlier than the Bachelor's date many applicants expect.

Martin Luther University teaches 15 of its 230 degree programmes entirely in English, concentrated in the natural sciences (including Biology, Biochemistry International and Molecular and Cellular Biosciences) and in the School of Economics and Business, which also offers an English-taught Business Economics Bachelor. Most of the English-taught catalogue sits at Master's level. You can study these programmes without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

Martin Luther University asks for at least a B2-level English certificate for its bilingual and English-taught degree programmes. The large majority of its programmes are taught in German instead, which needs German proof such as DSH-2, TestDaF at 4 points in every section, Goethe-Zertifikat C2, telc C1 Hochschule, or DSD-II. The university does not publish one central IELTS or TOEFL score table: accepted certificates and minimum scores are set per programme and listed on that programme's own admission page.

Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start. City registration, a bank account and a room all take time to arrange before lectures begin.

Founded in Wittenberg in 1502 and merged in 1817 with the University of Halle (founded 1694), Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is the oldest and largest university in Saxony-Anhalt and a comprehensive research university spanning humanities, natural sciences, medicine and theology. Its natural-science institutes sit on the Weinberg Campus, one of the largest technology parks in eastern Germany, alongside partners such as the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer Society.

Halle is a compact city of around 240,000 people, about an hour from Leipzig and Berlin by train, which keeps living costs lower than in Germany's largest university cities.
