How much does Medizinische Hochschule Hannover cost for international students?
Nothing in tuition for the Bachelor's programmes (Human Medicine, Dentistry, Midwifery Science, Biology) and for the German-taught, consecutive Master's programmes (Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Public Health, Biomedical Data Science), because Lower Saxony funds MHH as a public institution like any other state university in the region.
What every student pays is the semester contribution, and it is not a fee for teaching. For winter 2026/27 it is 407.80 EUR, of which 226.80 EUR is the semester ticket for public transport in the Hannover region and regional rail across Lower Saxony and Bremen, with the rest split between student services (Studentenwerk Hannover), the student union (AStA) and an administrative fee. The amount is set each semester, so it changes.
The one exception is the Master's in Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH), a joint Erasmus Mundus degree run with Université de Tours and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona: alongside the ordinary semester contribution, it carries its own programme fee of 4,500 EUR per year for EU (programme-country) students and 9,000 EUR per year for non-EU (partner-country) students, billed by the consortium rather than by MHH's own enrolment office.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's (Human Medicine, Dentistry, Midwifery Science, Biology) | No tuition fees |
| Master's, German-taught (Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Public Health, Biomedical Data Science) | No tuition fees |
| Master's, Infectious Diseases and One Health (IDOH) | 4,500 EUR/year (EU) or 9,000 EUR/year (non-EU), plus the semester contribution |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 407.80 EUR per semester (winter 2026/27) |
No tuition doesn't mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
MHH takes new undergraduate students only for the winter semester (courses start in October); there is no summer intake for Human Medicine, Dentistry or Midwifery Science. Deadlines for non-EU applicants differ by programme and are set by three different bodies rather than by MHH itself.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline (non-EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Human Medicine, Dentistry (Bachelor, 1st semester) | Winter (October) only | Set annually by Hochschulstart or uni-assist, depending on nationality |
| Infectious Diseases and One Health (Master) | Winter (autumn intake) | Set by the IDOH consortium (Tours / Barcelona / Hannover), not by MHH |
| Midwifery Science (Master) | Winter | Not published on an MHH page in English |
How do you apply to Medizinische Hochschule Hannover?
There is no single MHH application portal. Human Medicine and Dentistry places are allocated through the nationwide Hochschulstart procedure, or through uni-assist if you are not on equal footing with German applicants for admissions purposes; MHH names both routes and tells applicants to check which one applies to their nationality and qualification. The Infectious Diseases and One Health Master runs on a separate, joint application system operated by the Erasmus Mundus IDOH consortium together with Université de Tours and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, so an MHH-only application account does not exist for that programme either.
Pick your programme and check its language
Confirm whether your programme is one of the two taught in English (Infectious Diseases and One Health, or Midwifery Science), since everything else at MHH is taught in German.
Register in the portal
Hochschulstart or uni-assist for Human Medicine, Dentistry and most other Bachelor's and German-taught Master's routes; the IDOH consortium portal for that Master's specifically.
Submit before your deadline
Certified copies and translations can take weeks to obtain, so start collecting documents well before the window for your programme opens.
Then start to prepare your visa
You need the admission letter for your visa appointment, and appointments in peak season take six to twelve weeks.

How many programmes are taught in English?
MHH teaches exactly two programmes fully in English: the Master's in Infectious Diseases and One Health, a joint Erasmus Mundus degree with Université de Tours and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and the Master's in Midwifery Science. Both are Master's level and both sit in the health sciences; there is no English-taught Bachelor's or English-taught Human Medicine or Dentistry track. You can study either of these two Master's without German, though B2-level German still helps day to day, since patients, ward rounds and clinical conferences run in German even on an English-taught programme.
Which English certificates does Medizinische Hochschule Hannover accept?
English-language certificates apply only to the two English-taught Master's programmes; every other route at MHH asks for a German certificate instead (typically category A or A+, roughly B2 level), and MHH states plainly that no preparatory German courses or German exams are offered on site.
| Certificate | Typical range |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5–7.0 (Master's) |
| TOEFL iBT | ~90–100 (Master's) |
When does the semester start?
Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start. The winter semester formally begins on 5 October 2026. MHH's central lecture-times page covers Human Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedicine, Biochemistry and Biomedical Data Science; the Infectious Diseases and One Health and Midwifery Science programmes are listed on their own programme pages.
| Semester | Semester period | Lecture period |
|---|---|---|
| Winter 2026/27 | 5 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 2027 | 12 Oct 2026 – 29 Jan 2027 (Master's, e.g. Biomedicine/Biochemistry); Medicine runs 5 Oct 2026 – 12 Mar 2027 |
| Summer 2027 | 1 Apr 2027 – 30 Sep 2027 | 5 Apr 2027 – 16 Jul 2027 (Master's); Medicine runs 19 Apr – 23 Jul 2027 |
About Medizinische Hochschule Hannover
Founded in 1965, MHH is Germany's only free-standing medical university, built on an integration model that puts patient care, research and teaching under one roof on a single campus in the Roderbruch district of eastern Hannover. It is one of Germany's largest transplant centres and works closely with the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research and Fraunhofer ITEM, both nearby, which is why research placements are easy to combine with study here.
For an international student the defining fact is the language: almost the entire course catalogue, including Human Medicine and Dentistry, is taught in German, and only the Infectious Diseases and One Health and Midwifery Science Master's programmes are taught in English, so MHH suits applicants who either already have German or want one of those two specific Master's degrees rather than a broad English-taught catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
Does Medizinische Hochschule Hannover use uni-assist?
For most routes, yes, alongside Hochschulstart. Bachelor's applicants in Human Medicine and Dentistry go through Hochschulstart or uni-assist depending on nationality and where their qualification was obtained. The Infectious Diseases and One Health Master instead uses a joint Erasmus Mundus portal shared with its two partner universities abroad, not uni-assist.
Do I need German to study at Medizinische Hochschule Hannover?
For almost everything, yes. German at B2 level, or a category A/A+ certificate for Bachelor's admission, is required outside the two English-taught Master's, Infectious Diseases and One Health and Midwifery Science, and even on those, patients and ward rounds are in German.
What does Medizinische Hochschule Hannover require when you enrol?
Alongside your admission letter, passport and residence documents, you need proof of German health insurance from a German insurer, which for public cover costs about 125 EUR per month. See our health insurance comparison.
Does an English-taught Bachelor replace the language test?
MHH does not offer an English-taught Bachelor's waiver route the way some universities do, since German is required for Bachelor's enrolment regardless of your previous language of instruction. For the two English-taught Master's, an English certificate is asked for instead of German.
What is the semester contribution and what does it cover?
407.80 EUR for winter 2026/27. Of that, 226.80 EUR is the semester ticket for regional and nationwide rail, and the rest funds student services (Studentenwerk Hannover), the student union (AStA) and an administrative fee. It is set each semester, so it changes.
