Neubrandenburg charges no tuition fee for Bachelor's or Master's degree programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike, because it is a public Fachhochschule funded by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

What every student pays is the semester contribution, which is not a fee for teaching. At most German universities this funds the Studierendenwerk, the student body, and usually the Deutschlandticket for nationwide public transport.

Continuing-education (Weiterbildung) programmes are a separate track with their own fees of up to about 3,015 EUR per semester; this does not apply to the standard Bachelor's or Master's programmes.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds: for the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, transferred months before the semester starts.

These deadlines apply to anyone applying with foreign (non-German) certificates through uni-assist. Neubrandenburg does not publish a separate, later date for EU applicants, so the dates below apply regardless of citizenship. Most Bachelor's programmes admit only in the winter semester. There are currently no restricted-admission (NC) programmes at Neubrandenburg, so the 7 percent NC reservation for non-EU applicants does not apply.

Through uni-assist, the shared application portal used by many German universities. Neubrandenburg does not run its own applicant portal for holders of foreign certificates, so the standard uni-assist processing fee applies, about 75 EUR for the first application and 30 EUR for each further one, and documents are only processed once that fee is paid.

Neubrandenburg teaches 3 degree programmes fully in English, all at Master's level: Management of Health Services, Geodesy and Geoinformatics, and Food Technology, out of a wider catalogue of around 33 Bachelor's and Master's programmes taught mostly in German. You can complete these English programmes without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge are accepted for the three English-taught Master's programmes, each requiring at least CEFR B2. The exact score is set per programme, so check your programme page before booking a test.

Semester periods follow the standard German academic calendar. Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start, since city registration, a bank account and a room all take time to arrange beforehand.

Neubrandenburg is a small city of around 60,000 people, and its roughly 1,832 students share four halls of residence run by the Studierendenwerk Greifswald, which manages student housing across Greifswald, Stralsund and Neubrandenburg together. Rooms here are cheaper than in Germany's larger student cities, and international students who register early are given priority for a hall place, so it is worth applying the day you are admitted rather than waiting.

A public Fachhochschule founded in 1991, with around 1,832 students across four faculties: Agriculture and Food Sciences; Health, Nursing and Administration; Landscape Sciences and Geomatics; and Social Work, Education. It is a compact campus university on the shore of the Tollensesee, in a city of about 60,000 people, within easy reach of the Mecklenburg Lake District and around 90 minutes from Berlin by train.

Teaching is applied and practice-oriented, with a mandatory practical semester built into every programme and close regional ties in agriculture, health and social care, including several dual-study programmes that combine a vocational qualification with the Bachelor's degree. For an international student the appeal is a small, low-cost city with close staff contact, rather than a large research-university environment.
