How much does University of Education Freiburg cost for international students?
PH Freiburg is a public university in Baden-Württemberg, where students from outside the EU pay a state tuition fee of 1,500 EUR per semester for a Bachelor's or consecutive Master's. Some groups are exempt, for example under the state fee law or for exceptional talent. A second degree costs 650 EUR per semester; since summer 2025 this no longer applies to teaching degrees.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's and consecutive Master's, non-EU | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Second degree (not teaching degrees) | 650 EUR per semester |
| MA E-LINGO (part-time, continuing education) | 1,600 EUR per semester |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 199.50 EUR per semester (103 EUR Studierendenwerk + 80 EUR administrative fee + 16.50 EUR student body) |
| RVF regional semester ticket (optional) | 98 EUR per semester |
| uni-assist application | 75 EUR for the first university |
The semester contribution does not include the Deutschlandticket; a regional RVF semester ticket can be bought separately. The figures are stated as current by PH Freiburg, so confirm them for your semester.
On top of the fees, you need proof of funds for the student visa: 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account.
What are the application deadlines?
PH Freiburg publishes one set of dates for all applicants; international applicants apply within the regular application periods. Non-EU applicants with a foreign school certificate apply through uni-assist and in PH Freiburg's own portal, and compete for a quota of 8% of places. Non-teaching programmes admit in the winter semester only.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Master's, teaching degree | Summer (April) | 2–30 November |
| Bachelor's, teaching degree | Summer (April) | 15 January |
| Master's, teaching degree | Winter (October) | 12–31 May |
| Bachelor's and Master's, admission-restricted | Winter (October) | 15 July |
| Bachelor's and Master's, open admission | Winter (October) | 15 September |
Leave enough time for uni-assist processing, and check the current dates on PH Freiburg's application page before applying.
How many programmes are taught in English?
PH Freiburg offers one English-taught programme: the MA E-LINGO – Teaching English to Young Learners, a part-time, blended-learning continuing-education Master's with an October intake. It requires a year of work experience and English at B2, but no German. Because it is part-time with mostly online study, PH Freiburg notes that students may get a visa only for the face-to-face meetings, not for the whole semester.
All other degree programmes are taught in German and require DSH-2 or TestDaF 4 in all sections.
