BEFORE YOU APPLY

Reutlingen School of Theology (Theologische Hochschule Reutlingen, THR) is a small, state-recognised university run by the United Methodist Church. It sets its own tuition fees: 600 EUR per semester for the Bachelor's in Theology (up to 300 EUR of it can be earned back through student services) and 125 EUR per month for full-time study in Social Work and Diaconia, plus a basic contribution of 87.50 EUR and a student fund fee of 5 EUR per semester. All programmes are taught in German (TestDaF 4x4, DSH-2 or telc C1 Hochschule). How much does Reutlingen School of Theology cost for international students?

Reutlingen School of Theology is a church-run, state-recognised university and sets its own fees. The Baden-Württemberg fee of 1,500 EUR per semester for non-EU students applies only at public universities, not at THR.

ItemCost for international students
Theology (B.A.)600 EUR per semester; up to 300 EUR of this can be earned back through student services
Social Work and Diaconia (B.A.)125 EUR per month full-time (105 EUR tuition + 20 EUR administration fee); dual study adds 50 EUR per month
Theology (M.A.)Ask THR for the current fee
Basic contribution (canteen and services)87.50 EUR per semester
Student fund5 EUR per semester

A reduction of 150 EUR per semester is available on application in cases of social hardship. The reduced Social Work fee applies to students starting from winter 2025/26 thanks to state funding.

Tuition fees come on top of the proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

You apply directly to THR. The Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Theology normally start in the winter semester; a start in the summer semester is possible by arrangement. Social Work and Diaconia starts in winter only.

ProgrammeIntakeDeadline (non-EU)
Theology (B.A.)Winter15 July
Theology (B.A.)Summer (by arrangement)15 March
Theology (M.A.)Winter1 September

International applicants for a Bachelor's programme must first obtain a certificate of university entrance qualification from the Ausländerstudienkolleg Konstanz (ASK) and include it in their application. THR recommends that international applicants contact it well before the deadline, and dates can vary, so confirm the current deadline with THR.

How many programmes are taught in English?

No degree programme at Reutlingen School of Theology is taught in English; courses are generally held in German, with a few exceptions. Applicants whose native language is not German must prove German with TestDaF (level 4 in all four parts), DSH-2 or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule.

About Reutlingen School of Theology

Reutlingen School of Theology (Theologische Hochschule Reutlingen) was founded in 1877 and is run by the United Methodist Church (Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche); it has been a state-recognised university since 2005. It is a small university with around 100 students and is not to be confused with Reutlingen University (Hochschule Reutlingen).

THR offers a Bachelor's and a Master's in Theology and a Bachelor's in Social Work and Diaconia, which leads to the state-recognised social work degree and can also be studied in a dual format with a practice partner. The part-time Master's in Christian Spirituality, taught alongside work, is not suitable for a student visa. Students can take additional courses at the University of Tübingen through a cooperation.
