How much does Rottenburg University of Applied Forest Sciences cost for international students?
Students from outside the EU and EEA pay a tuition fee of 1,500 EUR per semester, for Bachelor's and Master's programmes alike. The fee is set by Baden-Württemberg state law and has applied since winter 2017/18. EU and EEA citizens pay no tuition. Some non-EU students are exempt, including holders of a German school-leaving qualification, holders of a permanent residence permit, recognised refugees and exchange students. Students can apply to have the fee waived for a semester of leave or a practical semester.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's, EU/EEA | No tuition fees |
| Bachelor's and Master's, non-EU | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Semester contribution (winter 2026/27) | 206.60 EUR per semester (80 EUR administration + 91.60 EUR Studierendenwerk incl. naldo basic contribution + 15 EUR student body + 20 EUR excursion fee) |
Unlike at most German universities, the semester contribution does not include a Deutschlandticket. Students in the SENCE Master's pay a different amount, shown in the campus portal, so confirm it with HFR.
The tuition fee is separate from the proof of funds. For the student visa you also need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
HFR publishes one set of dates that applies to all applicants, with no separate deadline for non-EU applicants. The deadlines are cut-off dates and are the same for programmes with and without restricted admission. Applications open in May for the winter semester and in November for the summer semester.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's, all programmes | Winter | 15 July |
| Bachelor's, Renewable Energies only | Summer | 15 January |
| Master's, all programmes | Winter | 15 July |
| Master's, Forestry and SENCE only | Summer | 15 January |
All other Bachelor's programmes and the Master's in Resource-efficient Building admit in the winter semester only.
How many programmes are taught in English?
HFR offers no degree programme taught in English. All five Bachelor's and all three Master's programmes are taught in German. The admission rules for the Master's in Forestry and in SENCE ask for German at C1 level, for example TestDaF 4x4 or telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule.
