How much does Städelschule – Academy of Fine Arts Frankfurt cost for international students?

As a public art academy in Hesse, the Städelschule charges no tuition fees for Fine Arts, for EU and non-EU students alike. The postgraduate Master of Arts in Architecture (Städelschule Architecture Class) is the exception and charges tuition. Guest auditors pay 50 EUR per course and semester for individual theory courses.

ItemCost for international students
Fine Arts (full-time studies)No tuition fees
M.A. Architecture (Städelschule Architecture Class)About 8,500 EUR per year, plus a 1,000 EUR deposit when you accept your place (deducted from the first semester's fee); confirm with SAC
Semester contribution (everyone)Not published, ask the Studierendensekretariat (studierendensekretariat@staedelschule.de)

The Architecture Class fee comes from third-party listings and earlier SAC announcements, because the Städelschule website could not be read automatically.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

The Städelschule publishes one application window for all applicants, not a separate non-EU date. Only complete online applications are considered. For Fine Arts, a portfolio of your own work is reviewed first, and shortlisted applicants are invited by email to an entrance examination. There is no summer intake.

The Architecture Class dates come from third-party listings and earlier SAC announcements, because the Städelschule website could not be read automatically; confirm them with SAC (sac.applications@staedelschule.de) before you apply. If you need a visa, applying in the early round leaves more time.

How many programmes are taught in English?

Two degree programmes are taught in English:

  • Fine Arts (full-time studies, 10 semesters, degree: Independent Artist). All courses and class meetings are held in English. No German or English certificate is required, but sufficient skills in both languages are expected.
  • Master of Arts in Architecture (Städelschule Architecture Class, 2 years, postgraduate), taught exclusively in English.

The Curatorial Studies Master's, run with Goethe University, is not counted here because its language of instruction could not be confirmed.
