How much does Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) cost for international students?
THWS charges no tuition for its regular on-campus Bachelor's and Master's programmes, for German and international students alike. Tuition applies only to the continuing-education Master's programmes and to the part-time online programmes, which cost 1,500 EUR per semester for non-EU citizens and are not suitable for a student visa.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's (on campus) | No tuition fees |
| Online programmes (part-time), non-EU | 1,500 EUR per semester |
| Semester contribution, Würzburg | 182.10 EUR per semester (72 EUR Studierendenwerk + 110.10 EUR local semester ticket) |
| Semester contribution, Schweinfurt | 117.70 EUR per semester (70 EUR Studierendenwerk + 47.70 EUR local semester ticket) |
The semester ticket covers buses in your campus city; it does not include the Deutschlandticket, which you can add as a paid upgrade. Several other Bavarian universities now charge non-EU students tuition, but THWS has not done so for its regular programmes.
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
Most programmes admit only in the winter semester; a few also start in summer. English-taught programmes close one month earlier than German-taught ones.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's, English-taught | Winter (1 October) | 15 June (window opens 1 April) |
| Bachelor's and Master's, English-taught | Summer (15 March) | 15 December (window opens 15 October) |
| Bachelor's and Master's, German-taught | Winter (1 October) | 15 July (THWS recommends 15 June) |
| Bachelor's and Master's, German-taught | Summer (15 March) | 15 January (THWS recommends 15 December) |
For applicants not already living in Germany or the EU, THWS strongly recommends applying by 15 June or 15 December even for German-taught programmes, because later applicants often run into visa and housing delays. Applicants with a foreign certificate also need a preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist issued for THWS, which takes four to six weeks; applicants from China, India and Vietnam can upload their APS certificate instead. Restricted-admission Bachelor's programmes also require registration on hochschulstart.de. Check the current window for your programme in the THWS CampusPortal.
How many programmes are taught in English?
THWS offers 15 of its 69 programmes in English: nine Bachelor's and six Master's (winter 2025/26). Most English-taught Bachelor's programmes run on the international campus in Schweinfurt, in engineering, logistics, business and computer science; the Master's programmes are spread across both campuses. All other programmes are taught in German.
