Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

THM is tuition-free for Bachelor's and standard (consecutive) Master's programmes, but its continuing-education and distance-learning Master's programmes, run through the university's Fernstudienzentrum, charge their own fees of roughly 1,800 to 2,400 EUR per semester, so "tuition-free" does not cover every Master's route here.

How much does Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) cost for international students?

Nothing in tuition for Bachelor's and consecutive (standard) Master's programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike, because Hesse does not charge tuition fees for these routes.

ItemCost for international students
BachelorNo tuition fees
Master (consecutive)No tuition fees
Master (continuing education / distance, via Fernstudienzentrum)Roughly 1,800 to 2,400 EUR per semester

Every student also pays the semester contribution, which is not a fee for teaching and mainly consists of the Deutschlandticket for public transport across the whole country.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

THM applications for international (non-EU) applicants generally follow the standard uni-assist deadlines below. Requirements are set per programme, so restricted-admission (NC) programmes may have their own dates — check your specific programme page.

SemesterApplication deadline
Wintersemester15 July
Sommersemester15 January

How do you apply to Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM)?

Through uni-assist. THM is listed on uni-assist's participating-universities list and accepts online applications for uni-assist's pre-check (VPD). Budget for the standard uni-assist processing fee of about 75 EUR for the first application and 30 EUR for each further one, and expect to submit certified copies to the university directly at a later stage in some cases.

1

Pick your programme and check its language

Check whether the programme is taught in English or German, whether it has restricted admission, and whether it has a summer intake. Requirements are set per programme, not centrally.

2

Register with uni-assist, then in THM's own portal

Submit your certificates and transcripts to uni-assist for the pre-check, then complete any further steps THM's own application system asks for.

3

Submit before your deadline

Certified copies and translations can take weeks to obtain, so start collecting documents well before the deadline.

4

Then start to prepare your visa

You need the admission letter for your visa appointment, and appointments in peak season take six to twelve weeks.

How many programmes are taught in English?

THM runs 8 degree programmes fully in English, out of about 99 study programmes in total, concentrated in engineering and technology fields, alongside German-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes across twelve departments.

Most English-taught programmes at applied-sciences universities of this type are at Master's level, so a Bachelor applicant will typically need German for the majority of the catalogue. The English-taught programmes can be studied without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

About Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM)

Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen is a public university of applied sciences founded in 1971 (as Fachhochschule Gießen-Friedberg, renamed THM in 2010), and one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany, with campuses in Giessen, Friedberg and Wetzlar. Its focus is practice-oriented, technical degree courses across twelve departments, with particular strength in engineering, computer science and life sciences, complemented by the StudiumPlus dual-study programme run with regional companies.

Giessen and Friedberg sit close to the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region, which is useful for internships and working-student jobs, and THM cooperates closely with the neighbouring Justus Liebig University Giessen and Philipps University Marburg.

Frequently asked questions

Does THM use uni-assist?

Yes. Applications go through uni-assist's pre-check before any further step in THM's own system. That means the standard uni-assist processing fee of about 75 EUR for the first application applies, and certified copies may still be required by THM directly at a later stage.

Do I need German to study at THM?

Not for the 8 English-taught programmes, but you do need proof of English at the level your programme asks for. Most of the catalogue is taught in German, so check the language of instruction of your programme first.

Is THM really free for international students?

Yes for tuition on Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike. Continuing-education and distance-learning Master's programmes, run through the Fernstudienzentrum, charge their own fees. Everyone also pays the semester contribution, which mainly covers the Deutschlandticket for public transport across the whole country.

What does THM require when you enrol?

The standard German enrolment set includes proof of German health insurance, your admission letter, passport and residence documents, and certified copies of your qualifications; public student health cover costs about 125 EUR per month. See our health insurance comparison.

Does an English-taught Bachelor replace the language test?

This depends on your programme, so check per programme before assuming a waiver applies.
