How much does Friedrich Schiller University Jena cost for international students?
The University of Jena charges no tuition fees, for EU and non-EU students alike. One fee can still apply: students over the long-term study limit pay 500 EUR per semester.
Every student pays the semester contribution of 333.05 EUR for winter 2026/27, plus a one-off 20 EUR student card fee in the first semester. Of that, 226.80 EUR is the Deutschland-Semesterticket, which covers public transport across Germany.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | No tuition fees |
| Master (consecutive) | No tuition fees |
| Long-term study fee | 500 EUR per semester |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 333.05 EUR per semester (winter 2026/27) |
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
| Degree | Intake | Deadline (non-EU) |
|---|---|---|
| Master | Winter (October) | 31 May (German and EU applicants: 31 August) |
| Master | Summer (April) | 15 January (German and EU applicants: 15 February) |
| Bachelor and State Examination | Winter (October) | 15 July |
| Bachelor and State Examination (selected programmes) | Summer (April) | 15 January |
Non-EU Master applicants must apply three months earlier than German and EU applicants for the winter intake. Master applications open on 1 April (winter) and 1 December (summer); many Master programmes have no summer intake. Some programmes, such as MSc Photonics, use their own application route, so check the programme page.
