How much does University of Bayreuth cost for international students?
The University of Bayreuth does not charge tuition fees, and this includes students from outside the EU. Bavarian law allows universities to charge non-EU students, and some Bavarian universities do, but Bayreuth's fee statute contains no fee based on nationality.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's | No tuition fees |
| Semester contribution (winter 2026/27 and summer 2027) | 172 EUR per semester (87 EUR Studentenwerk Oberfranken + 85 EUR regional semester ticket) |
The semester ticket covers regional transport, not the Deutschlandticket. Applicants with foreign certificates also pay uni-assist's fee for the preliminary review (VPD).
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.
What are the application deadlines?
The university publishes one date per semester, which applies regardless of nationality; there is no earlier non-EU deadline. Applicants with a foreign school or Bachelor's qualification need a uni-assist preliminary review documentation (VPD), which may take six to eight weeks, and then apply in the university's own portal, CAMPUSonline.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's and Master's | Summer (April) | 15 January |
| Bachelor's and Master's | Winter (October) | 15 July |
The VPD can be uploaded up to four weeks after the deadline. Studienkolleg applicants are advised to apply by 15 June or 15 December. Some programmes may have their own deadlines, so check your programme page before applying.
How many programmes are taught in English?
The University of Bayreuth offers around 22 programmes taught in English, almost all at Master's level, for example Scientific Computing, Development Studies, African Verbal and Visual Arts and Intercultural Anglophone Studies. Check the language of instruction for your programme in the university's programme finder.
English-taught programmes usually require English at B2 (for example IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80). The university also requires German at A1, which Master's students can submit by the end of the second semester. German-taught programmes require German at B2 or higher.
