University of Greifswald for International Students

BEFORE YOU APPLY

Bachelor's and most Master's programmes at the University of Greifswald carry no tuition fees, but a small number of continuing-education Master's programmes can charge a fee, so it is worth checking the specific programme page before assuming the whole catalogue is free. Most degree courses share the same 15 July deadline for EU and non-EU applicants alike, but the M.Sc. Landscape Ecology and Nature Conservation sets a much earlier non-EU deadline of 1 March, more than four months ahead of the general date.

How much does University of Greifswald cost for international students?

University of Greifswald charges no tuition fees for Bachelor's degree courses and most Master's degree courses, for EU and non-EU students alike, because Mecklenburg-Vorpommern funds the university as a public institution. A small number of continuing-education Master's programmes can carry a separate fee.

What every student pays is the semester fee, and unlike many German universities it does not fund a nationwide Deutschlandticket: the fee is 127.00 EUR for re-registration or 152.00 EUR on first enrolment, made up mostly of the mandatory Studierendenwerk contribution and a small student-body fee.

ItemCost for international students
BachelorNo tuition fees
Master (most programmes)No tuition fees
Master (continuing education)Fee may apply
Semester fee, everyone (re-registration)127.00 EUR per semester
Semester fee, everyone (first enrolment)152.00 EUR per semester

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

What are the application deadlines?

These are the deadlines the University of Greifswald publishes for applicants without EU/EEA citizenship. Unlike many universities, Greifswald's non-EU deadline matches its EU deadline for almost every degree course; the one clear exception is a single Master's programme with a much earlier cutoff.

DegreeIntakeDeadline (non-EU)
All degree courses except Landscape EcologyWinter (October)15 July
M.Sc. Landscape Ecology and Nature ConservationWinter (October)1 March
All degree courses starting in summerSummer (April)15 January

Deadlines shown are for winter semester 2026/2027 and summer semester 2027. Restricted-admission programmes and Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy for EU/EEA applicants follow separate windows, partly administered through the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (hochschulstart.de).

How do you apply to University of Greifswald?

Through uni-assist, the shared application portal used by most German universities, so an application is subject to uni-assist's own processing fee (about 75 EUR for a first application, 30 EUR for each further one) on top of anything the university itself charges. Documents are checked twice: once by uni-assist for formal eligibility, and once by the University of Greifswald's International Office for subject-specific requirements.

1

Pick your programme and check its language

Check whether the programme is taught in English or German and what CEFR level it requires. Some German-medium programmes ask for proof up to C1 or C2, while several English-taught Master's ask for no German at all.

2

Register in uni-assist

Create a My assist account at my.uni-assist.de and upload your school-leaving certificate, CV, passport copy and language certificates. Applicants from China, India and Vietnam also need an APS certificate.

3

Submit before your deadline

15 July for winter semester and 15 January for summer semester cover almost every degree course; the M.Sc. Landscape Ecology programme closes earlier, on 1 March. Certified copies and translations can take weeks to arrange, so start collecting documents well before the window opens.

4

Wait for the decision, then start your visa

uni-assist forwards eligible applications to the International Office, which checks subject-specific requirements before issuing an admission letter. You need that letter for your visa appointment, and appointments in peak season take six to twelve weeks.

How many programmes are taught in English?

University of Greifswald offers 6 degree programmes taught fully in English, spread across the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law and Economics, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; most are Master's programmes rather than Bachelor's. The English-taught programmes can be studied without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities in a small city where English is less commonly spoken outside the university.

Which English certificates does University of Greifswald accept?

IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC are all accepted, and the required CEFR level depends on the specific subject rather than a single university-wide score, ranging from A2 for a few Bachelor's subjects up to B2 for most Master's programmes.

CertificateTypical range
IELTS AcademicBachelor 5.5–6.0, Master 6.5–7.0
TOEFL iBTBachelor ~72–80, Master ~90–100
TOEICAccepted; exact score set per subject
Medium of Instruction (waiver)UK, Ireland, USA, Canada (outside Quebec & New Brunswick), Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon

A secondary school leaving certificate or university degree earned in English in one of the countries above is also accepted as proof of English. Check the exact subject requirement before booking a test.

When does the semester start?

SemesterSemester periodLecture period
Winter 2026/271 Oct 2026 – 31 Mar 202712 Oct 2026 – 30 Jan 2027
Summer 20271 Apr 2027 – 30 Sep 20275 Apr 2027 – 17 Jul 2027

The winter semester formally begins on 1 October, but lectures do not start until 12 October 2026, so plan to be in Greifswald a few weeks earlier for city registration, a bank account and a room in a small city with a tight rental market.

About University of Greifswald

Germany's fourth oldest university and one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1456 in the Hanseatic town of Greifswald on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with teaching at Greifswald going back to 1436. Its strengths lie in medicine, the life sciences and Baltic Sea studies, and its plasma physics research benefits from the nearby Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics.

Roughly two-thirds of its students come from outside the state, and international students arrive from around 90 countries. Its small, coastal setting means a shorter and cheaper commute to campus than in a large city, and ferries from the nearby coast connect onward to Sweden and other parts of Scandinavia.

Frequently asked questions

Does University of Greifswald use uni-assist?

Yes. Applications go through uni-assist, the shared portal most German universities use, which means a uni-assist processing fee of about 75 EUR for a first application, on top of anything the university itself charges.

Do I need German to study at University of Greifswald?

Not for the 6 English-taught programmes, but you do need proof of English at the level your subject asks for. Most of the wider catalogue is taught in German at levels up to C1 or C2, so check your programme's language requirement first.

What does University of Greifswald require when you enrol?

Your admission letter, passport and residence documents, certified copies of your qualifications, and proof of German health insurance from a German insurer, which typically costs about 125 EUR per month for public cover. See our health insurance comparison.

Is University of Greifswald really free for international students?

Yes for tuition, for Bachelor's and most Master's programmes, for EU and non-EU students alike. Everyone pays the semester fee of 127.00 to 152.00 EUR, which funds the Studierendenwerk and student body rather than a transport ticket, since Greifswald's semester fee does not include a Deutschlandticket.

Does an English-taught Bachelor's or Master's replace the language test?

Only if it was earned in one of the countries the university names, including the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada outside Quebec and New Brunswick, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda or Cameroon, a notably wider list than most German universities accept.
