How much does University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) cost for international students?
HFF lists no tuition fee and no application fee on its application page. Bavarian law allows universities to charge new students from outside the EU, and some Bavarian universities do; HFF's pages name no such fee.
| Item | Cost for international students |
|---|---|
| Bachelor | No tuition fee listed |
| Master Serial Storytelling: Created by AI & I | Not published; ask HFF |
| Application fee (HFF) | None listed |
| uni-assist VPD (foreign certificates) | 75 EUR for the first application, 30 EUR for each further one |
| Semester contribution (everyone) | 97 EUR per semester (Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern only) |
The semester contribution does not include the Deutschlandticket or a local ticket; the MVV semester ticket basic contribution has been suspended since winter 2023/24, so you buy a ticket separately. Because Bavarian law allows non-EU fees, check HFF's current fee rules before you apply.
No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account.
What are the application deadlines?
HFF publishes one set of dates for all applicants; there is no earlier non-EU deadline. If you have a foreign school or university certificate, you need a uni-assist preliminary review documentation (VPD) first, which takes about 6 to 8 weeks and must be uploaded to the HFF applicant portal by the same deadline. Each programme has its own application tasks (in German), followed by a second selection round by invitation.
| Degree | Intake | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor (replacing the Diplom programmes from winter 2027/28) | Winter only | Application period 15 November to 28 February (cut-off; if 28 February falls on a weekend or public holiday, the next working day) |
| Master Serial Storytelling: Created by AI & I | Winter | See the programme page |
There is one intake per year, in the winter semester. Start the uni-assist VPD early, because it has to be finished before the HFF deadline.
How many programmes are taught in English?
No HFF degree programme is taught fully in English. Applicants need German at B2, and application tasks, lectures and exams are in German. The Master's programme Serial Storytelling: Created by AI & I requires both German B2 and English B2.
HFF lists eight programmes, which it is converting to Bachelor's degrees from winter 2027/28, and one Master's programme: Feature Film and Television Directing (with or without an editing focus), Documentary Film and Television Journalism (with or without an editing focus), Production and Media Economics, Screenwriting, Cinematography (Kinematografie or VFX focus), and the Master's in Serial Storytelling. Check the application page for the new Bachelor's structure.
