Nothing in tuition, for EU and non-EU students alike, for both Bachelor's and consecutive Master's programmes. North Rhine-Westphalia abolished general tuition fees at its public universities in 2011, and Wuppertal charges no separate fee to non-EU students.

What every student pays is the semester contribution, currently 358.05 EUR for winter 2026/27, of which the largest part is the Deutschlandticket for public transport across Germany. The rest funds the Studierendenwerk and the student union.

No tuition does not mean no proof of funds. For the student visa you still need to show about 11,904 EUR for the year, usually in a blocked account, and that money has to be transferred months before the semester starts.

These are the deadlines for applicants with a foreign university entrance qualification, who apply via uni-assist. This is the same 15 July date published for the general winter intake, so unlike some universities there is no separate, earlier non-EU deadline here, but several Master's programmes run their own application windows outside these dates.

A separate, direct application to the university (bypassing uni-assist) applies only in specific exception cases, such as transfer students, re-enrolment, and the Master's in Architecture.

University of Wuppertal offers 4 degree programmes fully in English: the Bachelor's in Sustainable Chemistry, and the Master's programmes in Computer Simulation in Science, Applied Economics and International Economic Policy, and Smart Materials and Systems. This is a small, concentrated offering compared with the university's overall catalogue, mostly at Master's level and mostly in the natural sciences, economics and engineering. A Bachelor applicant outside Sustainable Chemistry will need German for almost the entire catalogue. The English-taught programmes can be studied without German, though everyday German still helps with housing, part-time work and the authorities.

Scores are set per programme rather than on one central page, so check your programme page before booking a test. An English-taught Bachelor's degree can exempt you from the test on some programmes, but this is set programme by programme rather than centrally, so check before assuming a waiver.

Work backwards from the lecture start rather than the semester start. The winter semester formally begins on 1 October, and the summer semester's lecture period runs from mid-April, but plan to be in Wuppertal a few weeks before lectures begin for city registration, a bank account and a room.

Wuppertal is one of the more affordable German university cities, cheaper than Cologne or Duesseldorf a short train ride away, though rooms near the start of the winter semester are still competitive. Apply to Studierendenwerk Wuppertal halls as soon as you are admitted and search WG-Gesucht in parallel, since the halls have a waiting list.
